Italy: Piacenza down Trento. Great comeback for Padova over Cisterna. Milano, Perugia and Monza ok
5 min read
After yesterday’s advance, in which Valsa Group Modena down titleholders Cucine Lube Civitanova in just three sets, Round 4 of 2022/23 SuperLega CredemBanca (or if you prefer Round 3 of second leg) has been completed today.
The day started with a super Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza who, without Leal and Lucarelli and with a new head coach, conquer Trento in big match.
Not a good time for Piacenza, who entered 2023 decimated and with a new head coach, but nevertheless managed to beat the powerful rivals on the road.
And also the adventure of Massimo Botti, who replaced Lorenzo Bernardi on the bench at Piacenza, started in a perfect manner. The expert and former player, who had led Piacenza on their return to the SuperLega Credem Banca in 2019, made his debut as the head coach in the Italian top division, gaining the great satisfaction of conquering the BLM Group Arena. His team inflicted a 3-1 defeat (25:22, 19:25, 25:19, 25:21) on Trentino, breaking their rivalâs three-game winning streak, and it was a victory that allowed Piacenza to tie fourth-placed these rivals themselves in the standings both in terms of points and in the number of wins, remaining behind only in the set ratio.
Piacenza seemed more motivated, Trento less concentrated but the match could end in a different way if the hosts went all the way after recovering a seven-point deficit in the fourth set. However, all that Angelo Lorenzettiâs players were able to do was to level at 21-21.
Yuri Romanò top-scored for Piacenza with 16 points, while Cuban Robertlandy Simón served four aces.
Alessandro Michieletto and Daniele Lavia (71% attack â 15/21) scored 15 points esch on the losing side, while Serb Marko PodraĹĄÄanin set up six blocks.
In the meantime, Allianz Milano was celebrating a clear straight sets win on the field of newcomers and last-placed Emma Villas Aubay Siena (15:25, 22:25, 15:25). After a game lasted only one hour and 15 minutes, Milano made the difference above all in blocking (six only in first set and 13 at the end of the match), but also in attack led by Japanese Superstar Yuki Ishikawa (18 points through 64% in attack) and cuban Osni Mergarejo, named MVP of the game with 16 points, 48% in attack, 3 winning blocks and 1 ace.
Also absolute leaders Sir Safety Susa Perugia celebrated a clear win by 3-0, on the field of a very bad WithU Verona (17:25, 17:25, 16:25).
Perugia, on the other hand, was excellent basically in all elements, starting from 62% of positive reception against a very good team from the service line, but also in serving, with 12 aces, and in blocking, forcing Verona to attack with a poor 36%.
Captain Wilfredo Leon was named MVP of the game with 17 through 73% in attack (with 0 errors and 0 blocked!) and as many as 6 aces! Double digit also for Sebastian Solè (10 points and 70% in attack, including 3 winning blocks), and 9 for Oleh Plotnytskyi.
And what a comeback for Pallavolo Padova! After a 0-2 deficit in sets against Top Volley Cisterna in front of about 1500 home fans, they react and were able to reverse an almost desperate situation and even to win the game 3-2 (17:25, 19:25, 25:21, 25:20, 15:12). Bulgarian Asparuh Asparuhov was named MVP of the match with 19 punti (70% in attack), 2 aces and 1 block, but it was a really good performance also for all his team, that started 2023 in a very good way.
In the evening, Vero Volley Monza, still without Georg Grozer, defeated Gioiella Prisma Taranto by 3-1 (25:23, 22:25, 27:25, 30:28) at home, led by MVP Arthur Szwarc, author of 25 points who, toghether with Stephen Maar and Vlad Davyskiba, crashed the rivals’ reception. It was a very very hard fought game, with a lot of regrets for Taranto above all in third and fourth sets: at first, they had two points lead, but Monza recovered and managed to close 27:25 and, in fourth, they even wasted a six points lead, not enough to reach a tie break although the set ended overtime again, 30:28.
