Italy: Verona inflict 4th consecutive defeat on titleholders! Siena comeback in the direct clash vs. Padova, Piacenza, Trento and Modena ok

6 min read

After yesterday’s advance, in which Perugia celebrated their 30th victory counting all competitions, Round 17 of 2022/23 Superlega CredemBanca or, if you prefer, Round 6 of second leg, has been completed today.

The day started with a tie break between two sides that are fighting to avoid relegation, Emma Villas Aubay Siena and Pallavolo Padova.
After a two sets deficit, the hosts were able to react, to level the score and, eventually, to win the game at tie break (21:25, 21:25, 25:14, 25:14, 15:13).

In the meantime, also three hours of show at the PalaBanca in Piacenza, that decreed the victory of the hosts of Gas Sales against Taranto at tie break (29:27, 25:21, 20:25, 23:25 and 15:9). Taranto played a very good volleyball, also thanks to an excellent performance by the newcomer, the young French Ibrahim Lawani, who put down 28 points which, however, are not enough against a rival who returns to the victory after an opaque period.
After losing the first set ended overtime, and neutralizing the opposite Romanò during the match, Piacenza try Gironi, author of two excellent aces in the second set which allow the final stretch. In the third and fourth set, Taranto has an important reaction and leaves the hosts behind with a good advantage, managing to close the two partials favorably and everything is played at the tie break, un which there is only one team into the court, Piacenza, who put the match to an end with Gironi’s point that is worth a heavy 13-8, and Simon’s ace, 15-9.

The only game to ended with a clear result was the one played at the BLM Group Arena. The hosts of Itas Trentino defeated Vero Volley Monza in just three sets (25:15, 25:18, 30:28). For Trento, this was the first home win of 2023, and the third win in a row in the last eight days!
A success useful to confirm the second place in the standings, but also to reaffirm the good technical, mental and physical moment after the good games recently showed in Civitanova and in Poland, against European champions ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle. On the other hand, one of the best seasonal versions of Itas Trentino was needed to stop the race of Monza, who came to Trento with four consecutive victories and twelve points collected out of the fifteen available in the second leg. However, Kaziyski and his teammates responded present, approaching the match with great determination (led by Michieletto’s serve and Lavia’s attacks) and also resisting the opponents’ attempt to reopen the match in the third set, ended 30-28. Monza also wasted four set balls to bring the contest to the fourth set, but didn’t capitalize on them due to the excellent performance in blocking of the hosts. At the third chance, the ace by Sbertoli sealed the final 3-0, built above
all thanks to great performances in attack (53% for the team, 68% for Lavia, who ended the match as top scorer with 20 points).

The black period in SuperLega Credem Banca continues for titleholders Cucine Lube Civitanova, who suffered the fourth defeat in a row, today on the field of WithU Verona, 3-2 (25:22, 25:22, 20:25, 20:25, 15:12). The host redeemed themselves the first leg defeat at Civitanova’s Eurosuole Forum with an exciting first hour of play and an equally incisive tie break, also thanks thanks to the support of over 4,000 home fans.
Coach Radostin Stoytchev leaves on the bench the Russian giant Maksim Sapozhkov and bets everything on Malian Noumory Keita as opposite (MVP and top scorer with 29 points), with the addition of Magalini from the start, surprising the guests. Among Lube, Marlon Yant scored 21 points (58% in attack with 4 aces and 3 blocks), Bottolo 12 (1 ace), Zaytsev 11 (1 ace) and Gabi Garcia 10.
First set was very balanced, but the hosts made 5 heavy winning blocks, who then they managed to close 25-22, with 7 points by Keita and 8 by Zaytsev on the losing side.
In second set Verona led the game, with a great effectiveness in attack and 6 points from Keita. Although a drop in concentration, the guests try to reopen the set and level the score 19-19 with Garcia from the service line, but the final bears again the signature of Keita,
and his Verona: 25-22.
In third set Civitanova react, and attack with 60% with Garcia and Bottolo (6 points) to the court. Yant closes with an attack from the second line and an ace, 20-25.
In fourth set Lube managed to conquer the tie break, with a good job of the block and 6 points each from Garcia and Yant, however Verona want to win the game, and in decisive fifth set take a heavy 8-4 lead. Mozic put down the ball of 14-10, the rivals managed to cancel two match points, but surrendered 15-12.

In the evening, close the picture Valsa Group Modena’s four sets win on the field of Top Volley Cisterna – 1-3 (22:25, 23:25, 25:20, 23:25). Cisterna always forced to chase his opponents, with coach Soli whotries to shuffle the cards on the table by alternating all his attackers, but nothing to do against a rival who wanted to win the game.
The first two photocopy sets are won by the guests with a constant advantage thanks to Lagumdzija’s plays in the first set, while in the second set, they were led by Rinaldi and Ngapeth, who find glory and points. Cisterna raises his head in the third set, also thanks to the powerful attacks by Gutierrez and Dirlic but, although in the fourth set the hosts try to slow down the Modena’s run, in the end Lagumdzija makes the difference and finds two decisive aces to detach the hosts, Rinaldi close the game and Modena was able to back to home with the three points.
