What an upset in 1/8 Finals of 2022/23 Coupe de France that started today!
Ajaccio, currently at eighth place in Ligue B, had a 2-0 lead on Ligue A side Paris (which sits in the same place in the standings) winning without major problems first set, and then also a thrilling second set, ended overtime, 31:29. The team from country’s capital, however, reacts, taking third set to reopen the game 24:26, and also the fourth, that ended with a clear 15:25. The end of the game?
Absolutely no, as the hosts managed to complete this heist, taking their ticket to quarterfinals, in which they will face the winners between Montpellier and Plessis Robinson, who will face each others tomorrow.
In one of the most interesting game of the evening, as the two rivals are 4th and 3rd in Ligue A standings, Saint-Nazaire eliminated the defending champion Chaumont (2-3, partially 22:25, 25:18, 23:25, 25:17 and 11:15), and reach the quarter-finals too.
The other big match took place between Tours, finalist of the last edition, and Tourcoing.
Basically a remake of the last Round of Ligue A, Round 18, which had the same outcome as Tours again defeated their rivals in five sets (25:17, 25:17, 20:25, 26:28, 15:13).
Thanks to a perfect start, League A leaders entered their match perfectly in front of their home fans by winning the first two sets with the same score, 25-17. However Tourcoing managed to reopen the game and also to snatch the tie break, unfortunately ended 15-13. With this result, Tours join Saint-Nazaire in the next stage of the competition.
The other three games of the day ended in straight sets, and the winners are Sète, Nice and Poitiers.
After three hard-fought sets, with a gap of only two points in each one (25:23, 25:23, 25:23), Sète beat Cannes, the current fifth place in Ligue B, who beat Mende Lozere in the previous round (3-0). However, their journey come to an end in the round of 16, like last year.
In a duel between the current 12th in the French Championship, Nice, and the 14th, Cambrai, they were the hosts who won 3-0 (25:20, 25:22, 25:21), despite the heavy absences of starting setter Javier Gonzalez and captain Steven Marshall, injured. Nice won without major problems, dominating the game from the start, and Cambrai never had the opportunity to believe in qualifying, as they recorded their 16th consecutive defeat counting all competitions. ( PHOTOGALLERY OF THE MATCH )Nice will face Sète in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Poitiers sweep Toulouse on the road in a one-sided match (22:25, 19:25, 26:28), with the only exception of third set in which the hosts failed to reopen the game and qualified for the next round like last season. They will face the winner between Nantes and Narbonne, who will play tomorrow, too.
