Pool A hosts Italy destroy Belgium in the opener of Eurovolley2023!

2023 edition of EuroVolley started today!
And titleholders Italy started their path with the match against Belgium, with the opening game hosted at a hot UnipolArena in Casalecchio di Reno, Bologna, in front of 8728 volleyball fans.
As the reigning European Volleyball Champions, they are not shying away from their intent to claim another title!


With the privilege of playing in front of their home fans, expectations are very very very high.
It’s short, intense, and we have no right to make mistakes,” says head coach Ferdinando De Giorgi, while setter and team captain Simone Giannelli echoes the same feelings, adding that despite the challenges, they are “ready to start at full speed.

However, playing at home is never easy!
But Belgium, once a force in volleyball scenario, under the command of Italian-born coach Emanuele Zanini, never caused problem to the hosts, despite the return of outside hitter Sam Deroo, who ended tue game with 10 points but with only 43% in attack.
Simone Giannelli, on the other hand, used all his players, sending both Alessandro Michieletto and Roberto Russo in double digit, with the first one top scorer of the match with 13 points through 56% in attack, including 1 ace and 3 winning blocks, and the second who also contributed with 12.
Positive also the debut with senior national team of young Alessandro Bovolenta, author of the point that closed the game.
On the other side of the net double digits also for Ferre Reggers, top scorer with 11 points and 48% in attack.
The game ended in just three sets, 17:25, 18:25, 15:25, after 78 minutes of play, and the hosts who outclassed the rivals in all elements: 8 winning blocks against 1, 7 aces to 1 and 61% in attack against 41%.

Pool A will continue in Perugia, with two games scheduled on Wednesday while tomorrow, in Varna and Tel Aviv, Pool B and Pool D will start.
