Turkey: 2023/24 season starts today! All results of Round 1

The 2023/24 AXA Sigorta Men’s Volleyball League kicked off today, featuring two major big matches, both ended at tie break.

In an exciting match in Izmir, Galatasaray HDI Sigorta managed to overcome the hosts Arkas Spor – 2-3 (25:19, 22:25, 25:18, 19:25, 10:15). Despite trailing 0-1 and 1-2, they secured the victory with a decisive 15-10 in the fifth set. Top scorers of the match were German superstar Gyorgy Grozer from Arkas and Jan Hadrava from Galatasaray who scored 28 points each, while Miran Kujundzic also contributed with 17 points for the winners.

In another nail-biting derby, Halkbank surpass Ziraat Bankkart in a five-set thriller (25:19, 22:25, 25:22, 22:25, 16:14).
Halkbank’s Nimir Abdel-Aziz emerged as the match’s top scorer, scoring as many as 36 points (61% in attack, 4 blocks and 2 aces), well supported by Earvin Ngapeth’s 20 points, who played a complete performance with 53% in reception and 56% in attack.
On the other hand, a quite disappointed match for Matt Anderson, entered only in fourth and fifth set and amassed only 6 points.
For Ziraat, who lose the game despite an impressive performance in blocking, scoring 15 points from this element against 7 of the winners, Wouter Ter Maat and Oreol Camejo scored 19 and 17 points respectively.

In the other games of the day, tie break win also for newcomer Brand Group Alanya Bld. on the field of Rams Global Cizre Bld. – 2-3 (23:25, 25:22, 16:25, 25:19, 9:15), with 28 points by Bardia Saadat (68% in attack and 5 of his team 19 winning blocks!), while the others ended in straight sets.
Kuşgöz İzmir Vinç Akkuş Bld. down Bigadiç Bld. (25:19, 25:20, 25:23) with 15 points from top scorer Svetoslav Ivanov, Bursa BBSK defeated Develi Bld. (25:21, 25:16, 25:21) mostly thanks to Gokhan Gokgoz and Daudi Okello, who scored 15 and 12 points each, the first one with 71% in attack, while Fenerbahçe Parolapara needed 150 minutes of play to prevail against Spor Toto 3-0 (29:27, 25:15, 30:28).
To make the difference are the 13 winning blocks, against only 3 of the rivals, while Kaan Gurbuz ended the game as top scorer with 19 points (3 blocks, 1 ace and 54% in attack).
Close the picture Türşad, who won with the same results on the field of Hatay B.Şehir Bld. – 0-3 (19:25, 16:25, 22:25), with 4 players in double digits (Rahmi Caglar Aksoy, top scorer with 15 points, Plamen Shekerdhiev, with 13 and an inpressive 92% attack, 12/13 blocked once, Cansin Ogbay Enaboifo with 12, and Fatih Ugur with 11), 10 winning blocks against 4 of the hosts and an impressive performance in attack: 80%!
