First leg of 2023/24 Italian Superlega CredemBanca is over on Boxing Day, with all 6 games of Round 11 played.
In first match of the day, Rana Verona staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Cucine Lube Civitanova at the Eurosuole Forum.
Initially trailing 2-0, Stoytchev’s guys turned the game around, securing their third consecutive win and a spot in the Del Monte Coppa Italia Quarterfinals.
Decisive Donovan Dzavoronok, who led the charge with 17 points including five from the service line, earning the MVP award, while Cortesia also stood out with seven winning blocks, and their teammates Keita and Sani also contributed with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
The match began with a shaky start for Verona, marked by an early attacking error from Amin. However, they team quickly regained composure, with Dzavoronok and Zingel leading a strong offensive. Despite trailing initially, Verona’s persistence paid off, culminating in a well-deserved tie-break victory, 2-3 (25:22, 25:18, 16:25, 23:25, 12:15).
Another team who stunned a super favorite is Allianz Milano, who won on the field of Sir Susa Vim Perugia at tie break too, 2-3 (25:14, 25:20, 12:25, 22:25, 12:15).
So also Milano staged an epic comeback, led by MVP Matey Kaziyski, author of 25 points including the one that closed the game.
In first two sets, the hosts were able to keep the full control of the game, led by Herrera and Plotnytskyi, but above all with a great performance in blocking, with 9 points from this element only in first two sets. But then, at the 1-2 of third set, Kaziyski scored 6 aces and the game changed: Milano, led by Bulgarian superstar well supported by Yuki Ishikawa, managed to reopen the game, until a clear 18-13 in fourth set. The fifth one was very balanced until 12-12, but then Milano closed a game with similar numbers, and with as many as 15 winning blocks of Perugia, but it wasn’t enough, as Milano had a great team performance in attack, 60%. Among the hosts, Herrera was the top scorer with 20 points to his name, followed by Plontytskyi, who added 15, and Semeniuk and Flavio with 10 each.
Perugia, who closed the first leg at second place, will face Valsa Group Modena in quarterfinals of Italian Cup, the same Modena that today suffered a heavy home defeat against Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza, able to close the game in just three sets (20:25, 19:25, 21:25), despite the absence of Leal and in front of almost 5000 volleyball fans at PalaPanini ( PHOTOGALLERY OF THE MATCH).
To the top Itas Trentino, who today won as predicted on the field of Pallavolo Padova, 0-3 (20:25, 32:34, 22:25) and closed first leg with only one defeat in 11 games!
To make the difference the performance in blocking, with 12 points from this element (6 for Padova), and a better performance in decisive moments of the game, while Kamil Rychlicki with 12 points to his name through 47% in attack, including 2 blocks and 1 ace was named MVP of the match. Excellent also Podrascanin, with 4 winning blocks and 71% in attack, but also outside hitters Lavia and Michieletto, who scored 25 points in two.
Three very important points also for
Cisterna Volley, who surprisingly defeated Vero Volley Monza at home with the score of 3-1 (25:18, 25:20, 21:25, 25:22), with 24 points from MVP Theo Faure, and Gioiella Prisma Taranto, who celebrated their first seasonal win by defeating at home Farmitalia Catania with the same result, 3-1 (25:19, 25:23, 17:25, 25:23), with 15 points from a great Kyle Russell.
