Poland: Resovia struggled but defeat Gdańsk. Warszawa ok in Game 1 of Quarterfinals

After first two 2023/24 Plusliga Quarterfinals Game 1 played yesterday, in which regular season winners Jastrzębski Węgiel and No.2 Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie emerged victorious, No.4 Asseco Resovia narrowly defeated No.5 Trefl Gdańsk with the score of 2-3 (19:25, 27:25, 25:23, 16:25, 11:15).
The match took an unexpected turn during the second set when Stephen Boyer, a key player for the visiting team, sustained a potentially serious ankle injury while attempting to block a hit from Kewin Sasak, and had to leave the court with assistance after apparently twisting his ankle.
Prior to this, he had an exceptional performance, scoring 14 points with an attack efficiency of 73%, contributing significantly to his team’s efforts, and Jakub Bucki stepped in to replace him.
Despite this setback, though, Resovia managed to take the final two sets, gaining a very important advantage before the rematch scheduled for April 14th on their home court.
The game’s most prolific players were Kewin Sasak from Trefl Gdańsk, who left the court with a remarkable 30 points, followed by Mikołaj Sawicki with 23 points while, among the winners, MVP Torey DeFalco scored 24 points through 48% in attack, with 2 winning blocks and 3 aces, followed by Stephen Boyer’s 14.
In the other quarterfinal, No.3 in regular season Projekt Warszawa overcame an initial loss to dominate the remaining sets on the field of No.6 Bogdanka LUK Lublin, winning 1-3 (25:23, 13:25, 19:25, 19:25).
In addition to a great performance in blocking, with as many as 16 points from this element (7 for the hosts), Bartłomiej Bołądź led the charge with 26 points to his name, including 2 aces, 4 blocks, 65% in attack and MVP award. Decisive also Taylor Averill, who also contributed with 13 with 1 ace, 3 blocks and 82% in attack (9/11).
The return matches are also set for Sunday, April 14.
