European Golden League: all results of first week

CEV 2024 European Golden League started on Friday and continued throughout the weekend with 12 games played.
At A.Y.S. Sport Hall in Baku, Azerbaijan, Romania opened their campaign with an easy straight sets win over the hosts, 3-0 (25:16, 25:16, 25:19) while Ukraine, on Saturday, earned three points too after a 3-1 (20:25, 25:21, 25:23, 25:19) win over Romania, with 19 points from top scorer Danylo Uryvkin (55% in attack and 3 aces) and 16 from Yurii Semeniuk, including 5 winning blocks, 1 ace and 91% in attack (10/11).
The same Ukraine that, on Sunday, easily defeated the hosts Azerbaijan with a clean 0-3 (16:25, 16:25, 23:25), after just 71 minutes of play.
With 14 winning blocks, Croatia down the hosts Finland with the score of 3-1 (21:25, 26:24, 25:15, 25:22) at Hakametsä Arena Tampere and, on Sarurday they did the same by beating also Belgium with the same score, 1-3 (25:21, 24:26, 22:25, 24:26), despite 20 points each from Ferre Reggers and Seppe Rotty. 20 points also for Filip Sestan and 19 for Petar Dirlic, among the winners.
Belgium, who suffered a defeat also against the hosts Finland, who celebrated a hard fought 3-0 (25:23, 25:17, 26:24) win in front of their home fans, led in score by top scorer Niko Suihkonen (18 points with 2 aces, 2 blocks and 56% in attack).
In North Macedonia’s Park Strumica, Estonia defeated the hosts by 3-1 (25:23, 14:25, 25:19, 25:22) on Friday, but suffered a bad defeat on Saturday against currently leaders Czech Republic, 3-0 (25:22, 25:20, 25:16), who destroyed also the home team on Sunday, 0-3 (16:25, 15:25, 16:25). North Macedonia, in this game, left the court without a single winning blocks, against the winners’ 7, unstoppable also from the service line with as many as 15 aces in just three sets!
A weekend of games also in Portugal, where the hosts opended their campaign with an easy 0-3 (22:25, 19:25, 16:25) win over Luxembourg at Pavilhão Municipal Professor Joaquim Vairinhos Loule, and did the same also on Sunday, celebrating a well-deserved win over Spain, 3-1 (23:25, 25:21, 25:22, 35:33), after a never-ending fourth set! Decisive the top scorer Alexandre Ferreira, who left the court with 29 points including 1 ace, 3 blocks and 52% in attack.
On Saturday, Spain inflicted the second defeat in as many games to Luxembourg, 3-0 (25:15, 25:17, 25:21).
