Paris 2024: Michał Winiarski choose Germany’s Olympic Team!
3 min read
A month before the start of Olympic Games Paris, German National Team head coach Michał Winiarski has choosen his squad!
The German national team in Paris will be led by captain Lukas Kampa. In addition to the 37-year-old setter, there are two other very experienced players in the team: Georg Grozer (39, opposite) and Christian Fromm (33, outside hitter). Together, the three have played more than 700 international matches!
Kampa and Grozer are also the only played in the squad who have already played at the Olympic Games: in 2012 in London, the last time the DVV men appeared at the Olympics, and Germany ended the competition at fifth place.
Only Tobias Brand (25, outside hitter) was the only one not to take part in the sensational Olympic qualification in Brazil in October, while Erik Röhrs will miss the Olympic Games due to an injury.
The 23-year-old, in fact, suffers from a rare arterial Thoraic Outlet Syndrome (TOS), in which the narrow passage between the collarbone and the first rib is repeatedly completely compressed, preventing blood flow. As a result, he struggled with severe circulatory problems and recently had to undergo a (luckily successful) surgery.
“We used the VNL as preparation for the Olympic Games. Everyone played and everyone had the opportunity to show how important is to the team. Those who are now part of the team have proven exactly that and are currently the best players for our national team. We are going into the tournament with just one opposite, Georg Grozer, but with five outside hitters, although Moritz Karlitzek can also play as opposite. In the Olympic qualification, Erik Röhrs was the second opposite who also played outside hitter. Unfortunately, he is out due to his injury and surgery, and it is a shame because he has great potential and showed last year how important he is to the team. We have an outstanding opposite in Georg, but I also like playing with three outside hitters because the team is very balanced at the moment and then we play a different style,” said Michal Winiarski.
“We have a very good squad in all positions. We have many players with experience, but also some new ones – it is a nice mix of older and younger players. Of course, Georg Grozer deserves special mention. He turns 40 this year, but is still world class. His personality is also an important factor. When he is on the field, everyone plays better. With him and Lukas, we also have an axis that has been playing together for ages. But several others also showed in the qualifiers that we can win against Brazil and Italy with them. Krick and Brehme were actually set in the middle after the qualifiers, but Lukas Maase impressed in the VNL. Moritz Karlitzek once again demonstrated his universal skills in the VNL and did very well on the diagonal. Also as outside spikers, we have strong defensive players. Schott and Reichert were fundamental to qualifying last year. Tobi Brand, who was not involved in the qualifiers, has now hit like a bomb. He played a very good season in Poland and has now made a name for himself in the VNL played very clearly into the team,” added Christian Dünnes.
