Poland: winning debut for Warszawa, Cuprum Stilon Gorzów and titleholders Jastrzębski Węgiel in 2024/25 season

After the advance played yesterday, in which BOGDANKA LUK Lublin won at tie break on the field of Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie, first Round of new 2024/25 Plusliga continued today with other three games.
In an exciting start to the new season, PGE Projekt Warszawa triumphed over ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle with a 3-0 sweep (25:22, 25:23, 25:19) in a game that was marked by a significant moment in the opening set when Bartosz Kurek, a key player for ZAKSA, suffered an injury early on. After a fall that left him clutching his face, he was forced to leave the court, visibly struggling with an issue affecting his eye. Despite efforts by the team’s medical staff, he did not return to the field and he was later taken to the hospital for further examination.
Mateusz Rećko stepped in to replace him, but Projekt Warszawa capitalized on the disruption, cruising to a well-deserved victory.
Bartłomiej Bołądź was named MVP of the match with 20 points to his name through 62% in attack with 2 winning blocks and 3 aces, while Mateusz Rećko was the most prolific player for ZAKSA, leaving the court with 13 points, 1 block and 52% in attack.
Cuprum Stilon Gorzów, former Cuprum Lubin, emerged victorious in a tense 3-2 win in front of their home fans against Trefl Gdańsk (19:25, 25:19, 21:25, 25:22, 15:13) in their opening PlusLiga match.
The game was filled with emotional highs and lows in both sides, culminating in a tie-break that kept fans on the edge of their seats until the last ball. The match was also significant for Trefl Gdańsk’s captain, Lukas Kampa, who celebrated his 300th appearance in the PlusLiga! Despite the milestone, Cuprum Stilon claimed the hard-earned victory, led by MVP Chizoba Neves Atu, top scorer of Round 1 so far, with as many as 31 points in his pockets through 62% in attack and 2 winning blocks.
In the evening, Jastrzębski Węgiel kicked off their PlusLiga campaign with a hard-fought 3-1 victory against Ukrainian side Barkom Każany Lwów, partially 17:25, 14:25, 25:23 and 21:25. The defending champions dominated the first two sets, but the home team showed resilience in the third, narrowing the gap by claiming the set. However, Jastrzębski Węgiel regained control in the fourth set to secure the win, led by Tomasz Fornal, who had a standout performance and was named MVP of the match with as many as 23 points to his name through 69% in attack, 3 winning blocks and 2 aces.
Decisive in attack also German middle-blocker Anton Brehme, who contributed with 10 points including 1 block and 82% in attack.
Round 1 will continue tomorrow with other three games: Asseco Resovia Rzeszów will welcome PSG Stal Nysa, Indykpol AZS Olsztyn will face PGE GiEK Skra Bełchatów while, in the evenings, GKS Katowice will welcome newcomers Nowak-Mosty MKS Będzinx and will close on Tuesday with the postponement between Steam Hemarpol Norwid Częstochowa and Ślepsk Malow Suwałki.
