2024/25 Champions League kicks off today! Berlin down Ljubljana. Warszawa destroy Maaseik in Pool A

In start to 2024/25 CEV Champions League Pool A, Berlin Recycling Volleys secured a 3-1 win (25:20, 23:25, 26:24, 25:21) against Sloveniaās ACH Volley Ljubljana in front of a’ enthusistic home crowd at their Max-Schmeling-Halle. Backed by 4,836 fans, the team from German capital, led by standout setter Johannes Tille, fought hard to break through the rivals’ resilient defense.
Both unbeaten in their national leagues, the two battled fiercely, with momentum swinging back and forth. Berlin managed to take the first set, only to see Ljubljana rally in the second. However, the hosts regained control in a tight third set, ultimately sealing a well-deserved victory in the fourth one. Jake Hanes led the match as the top scorer with 26 points through 56% in attack and 2 of of team’s 12 winning blocks while, for Ljlubljana, Iranian player Amir Golzadeh stood out with 23 points.
This win places BR Volleys second in Group A. Next week, they travel to Belgium to face Greenyard Maaseik as they continue their Champions League journey, while ACH Volley will face their next challenge in Ljubljana against the Polish team Projekt Warszawa, who today showcased their dominance with an easy 3-0 (25:9, 25:17, 25:21) victory against Belgium’s Greenyard Maaseik in their opening match of the competition.
The Polish side surged ahead early, securing set scores of before their excited home crowd.
Leading the winners’ attack, Linus Weber tallied 17 points through 43% in attack, 2 aces and 5 blocks, well supported by Jurij Semeniuk who added 12 and Artur Szalpuk, with 11. Greenyard Maaseikās most prolific player was Francisco Iribarne, who scored 12 points. Warszawa excelled in offense efficiency (52% vs. 37%), serve points (62), and literally dominated in blocking, with an impressive 16-1!
