Joel Banks new Head Coach of the Netherlands National Team

2 min read

Joel Banks is officially the new head coach of the Netherlands men’s national volleyball team.

The 49-year-old British expert, who is currently leading Berlin Recycling Volleys, a powerhouse in Germany’s Bundesliga, has signed a two-year contract with the Nevobo (Netherlands Volleyball Federation), with an option for two more seasons, taking over from Italian coach Roberto Piazza, who led the Dutch team for five years.
But he is no stranger to Dutch volleyball, having previously worked as an assistant coach at Martinus Amstelveen and head coach of Langhenkel Doetinchem (now Orion Stars), where he won a national championship.
Before his tenure in Berlin, he also coached several Belgian clubs, including 6 years with Belgian powerhouse Maaseik, worked with national youth teams, and even served as Finland’s head coach.
After a season in Poland with PGE Skra Bełchatów, he joined Berlin Recycling Volleys in 2023, winning the Bundesliga title in his first season.

Excited for his new role, he sees great potential in Dutch volleyball. “The Netherlands has a rich volleyball history and a bright future. I am confident this team can maintain its global standing and work toward new goals,” he said.

We wanted an experienced coach who fits our vision. Banks has proven himself internationally and is well-prepared for this challenge,” added Nevobo’s new Technical Director, Heleen Crielaard.
