Serbia stun Brazil with a 3-0 sweep to reach World Championship Round of 16!
3 min read
In last day of 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in the Philippines Pool Stage, Serbia pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the competition, by beating Brazil in just three sets (25:22, 25:20, 25:22) to secure a place in the Round of 16.
The victory at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City comes after a weak start for Serbia, who opened the tournament with a shock loss to Czech Republic before bouncing back against China. Against Brazil, however, they displayed probably what was their better performance in last years.
An almost unstoppable Dražen Luburić left the court as the match’s top scorer with 19 points including two aces, while outside hitter Pavle Perić also contributed with 15. Double digit also for Miran Kujundžić, who tallied 10, while Setter Nikola Jovović orchestrated Serbia’s offense brilliantly, keeping Brazil’s block off balance throughout the match.
Their top scorer was Alan de Souza with 10 points, but the South Americans never found their rhythm.
Head coach Gheorghe Crețu praised his players’ composure and resilience:
“We had a tough summer with many injuries, but these young guys showed their heart. Luburić kept the team calm, Perić brought firepower, and our block and defense were excellent. This was one of our best games in years,” said after the game.
The result guarantees Serbia a spot in the knockout stage, in which they will face one of the top teams from Pool A.
On the other hand, for Brazil, the loss complicates their path as their advancement now depends on the outcome of Czech Republic vs. China later today.
