Champions League: fifth week continues with victories of Resovia in all-polish derby, Ziraat and Warszawa
5 min read
Fifth week of 2025/26 CEV Champions League continued today with other three games.
Ziraat Bankkart celebrated Quarter-Finals access after a 1-3 (23:25, 25:21, 20:25, 21:25) away win on the field of France’s Tours VB.
The Turkish side secured top spot in Pool A after recording their fifth win in as many matches, guaranteeing direct qualification to the last eight with one group game remaining.
At the Salle Robert Grenon in Tours, they prevailed over the hosts in 107 minutes. After sharing the opening two sets, the visitors regained control in the third and sealed the result with a strong finish in the fourth.
Tomasz Fornal was named MVP of the match, while Nimir Abdel-Aziz and Trévor Clévenot also made their contributions in attack. Tours remain bottom of the group with five straight defeats.
In Pool E, PGE Projekt Warszawa secured a dramatic 2-3 (18:25, 25:22, 25:23, 19:25, 7:15) away victory over Belgium’s Volley Haasrode Leuven, though the dropped point may hurt their chances of finishing second in Pool E.
The Polish side started strong, taking the opening set 25–18 with Bartosz Bednorz leading the charge from the serve line. The Belgian hosts responded by claiming the second set 25–22, their first set win of this season’s competition, and followed it up with a narrow 25–23 victory in the third after a late comeback.
Facing defeat, Warszawa regrouped and strong serving and improved blocking helped them level the match with a 25–19 fourth-set win. In the tie-break, Warszawa dominated, pulling away decisively to seal a 15–7 victory, with 26 points from MVP Bartosz Bednorz and 15 from Linus Weber.
Despite the win, Montpellier’s surprise victory over group leaders Cucine Lube Civitanova tightens the standings, leaving Warszawa with everything to play for in the final round.
Asseco Resovia Rzeszów earned a valuable straight-sets win over Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie in Pool D in all-Polish derby, prevailing 25:21, 25:23, 25:22.
The contest was closer than the scoreline suggests, with Zawiercie who began confidently and held a narrow edge in the opening exchanges, but Resovia’s serve proved decisive. Yacine Louati and Karol Butryn delivered timely aces as the hosts pulled away late in the first set.
The second set remained hard-fought, with Zawiercie briefly taking control midway through. However, Resovia responded with a strong run fueled by effective blocking and steady play from the serve line. The visitors closed the gap in the final moments, but a serve error handed the set, and a two-set lead, to the home side.
In the third one, Resovia kept pressure and composure. The rivals rallied to level at 21–21, yet Louati once again stepped up with a crucial ace.
A final block sealed the match and confirmed the straight-sets victory.
Yacine Louati was named MVP after scoring 15 points through 40% in attack, 3 aces and 2 blocks, while Artur Szalpuk left the court as top scorer with 17 points.
The result marks Resovia’s third win in the group stage, consolidating second place, while Aluron remain leaders despite suffering their first defeat.
