2 min read
The Belgian federation announced that Mathijs Desmet (26 years old, 1.98 m) has decided to end his professional career due to persistent ankle pain, despite several surgeries and a return this season in Roeselare.
The outside hitter for Roeselare was returning this year to the club where he signed his first professional contract (2017-2022), before appearances in italian superlega with the jesey of Padova (2022-2024) and then in Poland, with Cuprum Stilon Gorzow (2024-2025).
A Belgian international with 49 caps, he suffered a serious ankle injury during preparations for the 2023 European Championship. Despite several surgeries, persistent pain prevented him from regaining his best form.
After careful consideration, he decided to retire.
“It’s not an easy decision to make at the age of 26. Due to persistent physical limitations, I am no longer able to reach the level I demand of myself. Out of respect for myself, for my club, and for fans, I believe this is the right choice,” he told to the Belgian federation.
