European League 2026: last week started today. Denmark (temporarily) to the top, Spain their closest pursuers!

Third and last week of 2026 CEV European League started today with 9 games and (at least temporarily) a new leader, Denmark, who sweep at Tirana’s Olimpik Park Feti Borova Hall the hosts Albania with a clean 3-0 (25:17, 25:18, 25:21), led by Mads Kyed Jensen, top scorer of the match with 18 points through 54% in attack and 3 of the winners’ 6 aces, and 14 from Oskar Madsen (71% in attack, 1 ace and 1 block). Tomorrow Denmark, who became the very first team in this year’s European League to claim five wins in as many matches, will face Romania to stay to the top, waiting for the game between The Netherlands and Croatia!
Their closest pursuers at -1 and with 13 points in the standings, at least after today’s games, Spain, who literally destroyed modest Georgia 3-0 (25:18, 25:14, 25:8), while The Netherlands sit third with 12, just like Estonia and Finland. The first one will face Sweden tomorrow while the second will play an intetesting match against Slovakia in Iceland.
Straight sets win today also for Croatia, who sweep Bosnia&Herzegovina 3-0 (25:16, 25:23, 25:20) with 19 points from Gabrijel Cvanciger (59% in attack and 2 aces), Slovakia, who needed just 1 hour and 9 minutes of play to destroy Iceland 3-0 (25:10, 25:12, 25:15), Austria, who sweep Luxembourg 3-0 (25:14, 25:12, 25:15) with 12 winning blocks, 8 aces and 15 and 13 points respectively from their bombers Paul Buchegger and Lukas Glatz, and for North Macedonia, who trampled over hosts Kosovo in first two sets, and then managed to close the game 3-0 (25:12, 25:19, 27:25) too despute a thrilling third set in which they had to recover from 11-16 and then even 16-21! Nikola Gjorgiev top-scored the winners with 15 points through 55% in attack, 2 blocks and 1 ace, well supported by Stojan Iliev who added 11 through 77% in attack and 1 block.

Close the picture a four sets win of Hungary over the hosts Azerbaijan 3-1 (25:19, 22:25, 29:27, 25:16) at Baku’s A.Y.S. Sport Hall, with 20 points from Marcell Pesti, 12 winning blocks and 18 points from Kristóf Horváth, and the win of Sweden with the same result over Montenegro, 3-1 (22:25, 25:20, 25:19, 25:14), with 23 points from young Axel Enlund (53% success rate in attack, 3 aces and 3 blocks).
Four sets win also for Latvia over the hosts Norway 3-1 (21:25, 29:27, 25:18, 25:21) with 27 points from a great Renars Jansons (51% in attack and 2 blocks) after more than 2 hours of play.
By tomorrow, Saturday night, when all teams will have played at least five matches each, we will have a clearer understanding as to who remains in contention for the four coveted spots in the semifinals of the competition, but even more importantly as to who will eventually claim their ticket to the CEV EuroVolley 2028 more than two years ahead of the event!
