Nimir Abdel-Aziz was not included in the Netherlands’ 17-player squad for the matches against Belgium, creating uncertainty over the star opposite’s participation at the 2026 European Championship.

Head coach Joël Banks has not publicly explained the reason behind his omission, leaving the situation open to speculation.
His absence from the 17-player group does not automatically mean that the experienced opposite will miss the European Championship, but with the tournament rapidly approaching, his availability has inevitably become one of the main talking points surrounding the Dutch national team.

The Netherlands have already started their preparations, facing Belgium at Martiniplaza in Groningen. Without Abdel-Aziz, the Dutch side suffered a 3-0 defeat against the Red Dragons.

Belgium controlled the opening stages of the match, winning the first two sets 25-18 and 25-16. The Netherlands showed a much stronger reaction in the third, turning a 16-20 deficit into a 20-20 tie and briefly putting the visitors under pressure. Belgium, however, regained control in the decisive moments and completed the straight-sets victory.

The result itself is hardly the most important issue at this stage of the preparation period.
For the Netherlands, the bigger concern is the status of their star opposite.
Abdel-Aziz remains one of the most experienced and recognisable players in the Dutch programme, and his presence could be particularly important in a European Championship pool that promises to be highly competitive.

The Netherlands will compete in Pool C, alongside hosts Finland, Estonia, Serbia, Belgium and Denmark. All six teams will play their preliminary-round matches at the Nokia Arena in Tampere, with the pool phase scheduled for 10–17 September. The top four teams will advance to the Round of 16.

The Dutch therefore have little time to resolve any uncertainty surrounding their roster. With EuroVolley approaching, every preparation match will provide valuable information about Banks’ plans and the condition of his key players.

For now, however, one question remains above all others:
Will Nimir Abdel-Aziz be wearing the Netherlands jersey when EuroVolley 2026 begins in Tampere?
There is still no official answer.
And until one arrives, the absence of one of the biggest names in Dutch volleyball will remain one of the most intriguing stories surrounding the Oranjes’ preparations.
