Roof collapse at Busto Arsizio arena puts UYBA preparations on hold

Laica UYBA Busto Arsizio’s preparations for the new Italian Serie A1 season have been thrown into uncertainty after part of the roof at the e-work Arena collapsed on Thursday afternoon.

The incident occurred at around 3:00 PM local time, when a substantial section of the covering above the foyer suddenly gave way and materials fell inside the facility.
Fortunately, no one was injured.
Several workers were inside the arena at the time, carrying out inspections ahead of planned maintenance and renovation works on the roof and foyer area. Firefighters were called to the scene and the affected part of the building was subsequently secured.
The timing makes the incident particularly significant for the women’s historical club.
The e-work Arena is not only UYBA’s home venue but also the main training facility for the first team and its youth sector.
According to the team’s scheduled programme, Thursday afternoon was supposed to feature a ball-training session on the central court. The players, however, had not yet arrived at the arena when the collapse occurred. Only UYBA youth-sector manager Mario Graziani was reportedly inside the facility at the time; he heard the loud noise caused by the collapse but was not in the affected area.

The incident could now have consequences beyond the team’s daily training routine.
UYBA are scheduled to host the XXII Trofeo Mimmo Fusco at the e-work Arena on September 18 and 19, with VBC Cremonese, Millenium Brescia and Club Italia joining the hosts for the pre-season tournament.
The venue’s suitability will therefore have to be assessed before the tournament can go ahead as planned. Local authorities are following the situation, while UYBA will need to identify an alternative training solution if access to the arena remains restricted.

There is, however, a further element to the story.
According to local reports, the roof was already due for major renovation works because of long-standing issues, with technical inspections taking place precisely in preparation for the planned intervention. The collapse therefore occurred during a period in which the structure was already under examination.
For UYBA, what should have been another routine day of preparation has instead become an unexpected race against time, with the new season now just weeks away and the club’s home arena suddenly at the centre of an urgent safety assessment.
