Eight aces each: Nikolov and Plotnytskyi ready for a battle from the service line!

There will be plenty at stake when Bulgaria and Ukraine meet today at Arena 8888 Sofia, but one of the most intriguing individual battles could begin several metres behind the end line: after the opening two matches of EuroVolley 2026, Bulgaria’s Simeon Nikolov and Ukraine captain Oleh Plotnytskyi are sharing the lead in the tournament’s ace ranking, with eight direct points from serve each.

The numbers, however, tell a slightly different story.

Nikolov has collected his eight aces in just six sets, giving the Bulgarian setter an impressive average of 1.33 aces per set, while Plotnytskyi has reached the same total in seven sets, averaging 1.14.
It is a small statistical advantage, but one that underlines just how effective Nikolov’s serve has been at the start of the championship.

And the Bulgarian setter is not the only Nikolov making an impact from the service line, as his brother Aleksandar is also among the tournament leaders, sitting fifth in the ace ranking with four aces.
That means the Nikolov brothers have combined for 12 aces in Bulgaria’s first six sets of EuroVolley action — an extraordinary contribution from two players who occupy very different roles on the court.

Today, however, the statistics will be put to the test in a completely different context.

On one side will be Plotnytskyi, whose serve has long been one of the defining weapons of his game.
The Ukrainian captain can generate enormous pressure from the service line, whether through power or variation, and his ability to disrupt an opponent’s reception has often been an important part of Ukraine’s game.
On the other side will be Simeon Nikolov, whose serve has so far been particularly productive in Sofia.
For a setter still at the beginning of his international career, his ability to score directly and put opponents under pressure from behind the end line has quickly become one of Bulgaria’s most noticeable weapons.

The two players therefore arrive at their head-to-head encounter with exactly the same number of aces — but with very different stories behind those numbers.
And with Bulgaria playing in front of its home crowd, every successful serve could carry extra weight.
Will the tournament’s two early service leaders turn their statistical duel into a battle within the battle?
The answer will come tonight in Sofia, where Nikolov and Plotnytskyi will have the chance to make the service line one of the decisive areas of Bulgaria–Ukraine….
