Brazil and Argentina set for a decisive South American clash with LA28 at Stake

Brazil and Argentina have reached the decisive final round of the South American Men’s Volleyball Championship in Rio de Janeiro with identical records: four victories and 12 points.

When the two continental rivals step onto the court at Maracanãzinho today, the stakes will extend far beyond the South American title, as the winner will also secure the continent’s direct qualification spot for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Although the tournament does not feature a traditional final, its round-robin format has created one.
Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Venezuela and Bolivia face each other in a single league, with the team finishing top of the standings crowned champion.
The schedule placed Brazil and Argentina against each other in the final round, turning their encounter into a winner-takes-all battle for the continental crown and Olympic qualification.
The top three teams will also earn a place at the 2027 World Championship.

Brazil have been almost flawless throughout the tournament. Bernardo Rezende’s side opened their campaign with a 3–0 victory over Chile (25:23, 25:16, 25:21), before overcoming Bolivia by the same score the following day (25:18, 25:13, 25:16). Colombia were next, with Brazil securing another convincing 3–0 win (25:23, 25:14, 25:16). After a rest day, the hosts completed their first four matches with a 3–0 victory over Venezuela (25:19, 25:14, 25:19).
Four matches, four victories and not a single set conceded: Brazil entered the decisive encounter with a perfect 12:0 set record, underlining their dominance during the opening rounds.

Argentina, meanwhile, arrived at the final match unbeaten but having been tested more thoroughly.
The reigning South American champions began their title defence with a 3–1 victory over Venezuela (25:16, 25:11, 23:25, 25:13), followed by another four-set win against Colombia (25:21, 25:18, 22:25, 25:23).
Their third match brought a demanding opening set against Chile, which Argentina eventually won 28–26 before completing a 3–0 victory (28:26, 25:19, 25:17).
On Saturday, Horacio Dileo’s team closed their group-stage campaign with a 3–0 win over Bolivia (25:17, 25:15, 25:21), securing their qualification for the 2027 World Championship.
Argentina therefore enter the showdown with the same four wins and 12 points as Brazil, although they have dropped two sets during the tournament—one against Venezuela and one against Colombia.

The encounter also brings together the two highest-ranked South American teams in the FIVB world rankings.
Brazil began the championship in seventh place with 312.13 points and have increased their total to 317.61 following four consecutive victories. Argentina started the tournament ranked 14th in the world, with 232.41 points.
The ranking implications add another layer of importance to a match already carrying major sporting consequences.
For teams that do not secure a direct continental qualification spot, world ranking points could prove significant in the race for the remaining routes to Los Angeles 2028.
Argentina arrive in Rio as the defending continental champions, having ended an extraordinary period of Brazilian dominance in 2023.
That triumph marked their first South American title since 1964, bringing an end to a wait of almost six decades.
Brazil, meanwhile, have collected 33 continental championships and now have two objectives in front of them: reclaiming the South American crown and securing a direct place at the next Olympic Games.
The title holders stand between Brazil and both ambitions.
With the Olympic ticket, the continental throne and valuable world ranking points at stake, the latest chapter of one of South American volleyball’s defining rivalries is set to unfold in Rio de Janeiro.
