Tunisia crowned African Champions and book LA28 ticket! Algeria and Cameroon to World Cup 2027

Tunisia are African champions once again.
Playing in front of their home crowd at El Menzah Hall in Tunis, the hosts defeated Cameroon 3-0 (25:22, 25:18, 25:19) in Friday’s final of the CAVB Men’s African Nations Volleyball Championship, completing an unbeaten campaign and securing Africa’s direct qualification place for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
It is Tunisia’s 12th continental title, extending their record as the most successful team in the history of the African Nations Championship. The hosts had already collected 11 gold medals before this edition, and their latest triumph adds another chapter to a competition they dominated for much of its history.

The final itself was controlled by Tunisia from the opening exchanges. Cameroon remained within reach during the first set, but the hosts took it 25-22 and then increased the pressure. The second set finished 25-18 before Tunisia closed the match 25-19, ending the championship without a defeat.
The official statistics underline the quality of the performance. Tunisia finished with 33 successful attacks against Cameroon’s 23, while the hosts also had a narrow advantage in blocks, 9-8, and aces, 8-7. Oussama Ben Romdhane was the leading scorer of the final with 19 points, including 12 attacks, four aces and three blocks. Ali Bongui added 11 points for the champions.

For Cameroon, the silver medal represents another significant step in a programme with a long continental tradition. The Lions had reached the final after an extraordinary quarterfinal against Ghana, won 16-14 in the fifth set, before defeating Algeria 3-1 in the semifinals. Their second-place finish also guarantees Cameroon a place at the 2027 FIVB Men’s World Championship in Poland.

The title also carries a distinctly Italian signature. Tunisia were guided throughout the championship by Italian coach Camillo Placi, who took charge of the national team in 2025. His staff also includes Antonello Andriani, the 30-year-old coach from Gravina di Puglia, who has built an international career through club and national-team experiences in several countries.
For Placi, the African title adds another important achievement to a career that has already taken him to the Olympic stage with Bulgaria as an assistant coach and to the 2025 World Championship with Tunisia.
Under his leadership, Tunisia had already produced their best-ever World Championship finish in the Philippines in 2025, reaching 12th place.

The Olympic qualification makes the Tunisian victory even more significant. Under the qualification pathway for Los Angeles 2028, each continental championship awards one direct Olympic quota.
Tunisia therefore become Africa’s representative at the next Olympic Games, joining the United States as hosts, Japan as Asian champions, Cuba as NORCECA qualifiers and Brazil as South American champions among the teams already guaranteed a place in the men’s tournament.
The European continental championship will determine another direct qualifier later this week.

There was another important consequence of Friday’s medal matches. Earlier in the afternoon, Algeria defeated Morocco 3-0 (25:19, 25:21, 25:18) to take the bronze medal. Algeria therefore joins Tunisia and Cameroon as Africa’s three representatives at the 2027 FIVB Men’s World Championship in Poland, while Morocco finishes fourth.
For Algeria, the bronze is particularly significant after a tournament that included a major quarterfinal upset against defending champions Egypt. Algeria then pushed Cameroon in the semifinals before recovering to beat Morocco in the medal match. Their third-place finish gives them a place on the World Championship stage alongside the two finalists.

For Tunisia, however, the evening belonged entirely to the hosts.
Twelve African titles, an unbeaten run through the entire championship, the continental crown secured on home soil and, above all, a ticket to Los Angeles 2028. After eleven years since their previous African title, the Carthage Eagles are back on top of the continent — and this time their celebration comes with an Olympic destination attached.
