Premier Energy is stepping into European volleyball, becoming an official partner of the CEV and, in turn, of the organisation responsible for Europe’s major volleyball competitions, including the CEV Champions League Volley.
The partnership brings together one of Southeast Europe’s leading integrated energy companies and the continent’s premier men’s club volleyball competition at a particularly interesting moment for the sport in Romania. Premier Energy supplies electricity to more than 2.2 million customers across Romania and the Republic of Moldova and operates across electricity generation, distribution and supply as well as natural gas. The group also has around 700 MW of renewable energy generation capacity either in operation or under development.
For Premier Energy Group CEO Jose Garza, the decision to enter volleyball is about more than commercial visibility.
“At Premier Energy, we believe that energy is about much more than infrastructure and services. It is about people, communities, and investing in initiatives that inspire future generations. That is why we have chosen to support Volleyball – a spectacular sport that promotes discipline, teamwork, respect, and excellence. Romania has a strong tradition in Volleyball, and we believe it deserves greater visibility and support,” he said, commenting on the new partnership.
The agreement arrives as the 2027 CEV Champions League Volley prepares to get underway. The competition runs from October 2026 through May 2027, bringing together many of the strongest clubs and players in the world. The main-round draw, held in Luxembourg in July, produced five groups of four teams, while the Early Rounds will determine the remaining places before the group stage begins.
The competition officially starts with the Early Rounds from October 20 to November 26, followed by the main group stage from December 8 to February 17. The Play-offs and Quarterfinals will then take place in March and April, with the season culminating in the Final Four on May 15 and 16, 2027.
CEV President Roko Sikirić believes the new partnership reflects the growing commercial potential of the competition, while also connecting it with the momentum generated by EuroVolley in Romania.
“The CEV Champions League Volley represents the real pinnacle of club Volleyball. I am happy that Premier Energy Group has recognised also its huge, rather still untapped commercial potential and we look forward to joining forces with our partner for the successful delivery of a competition that assembles the very best players from across the globe. This partnership is also a wonderful opportunity to capitalise on the enthusiasm and interest for men’s Volleyball generated by the CEV EuroVolley matches recently contested in Romania,” he said.
There is also a particular historical connection behind the agreement. The organisation now known as the European Volleyball Confederation traces its roots back to the European Sports Commission, established in Bucharest in 1963. The CEV itself was founded ten years later, in 1973, and today brings together 56 national federations while overseeing Europe’s major indoor and beach volleyball competitions.
That Romanian connection gives the Premier Energy partnership an additional dimension. The country has a long volleyball tradition, and the recent hosting of EuroVolley matches provided another opportunity to bring the sport to a wider domestic audience. Now, through the Champions League, Romanian commercial support will also be connected to the highest level of European men’s club volleyball.
For Premier Energy, the move also fits into a broader regional expansion strategy. The group operates throughout Southeast Europe and strengthened its presence in Central Europe in 2025 through the acquisition of a 158 MW wind farm in Hungary. Its business extends from renewable generation to electricity and natural gas distribution, with more than 4,000 kilometres of natural gas networks in Romania.
The Champions League partnership therefore represents a meeting of two very different worlds that share a common language: energy, in one case literally and in the other through the intensity, movement and global reach of elite sport. With the 2027 Champions League season about to begin, Premier Energy will now have a place alongside the clubs and players competing for the biggest prize in European men’s volleyball.
