The volleyball world is mourning the loss of Chang Cheng Liu, who passed away on Monday, October 12 2026 at the age of 62 following a serious illness. He had begun the current German third-division season as head coach of Moerser SC but was forced to step down a few weeks ago for health reasons.

He was a major figure in the history of Moerser SC, both as an outstanding player and as a coach. A former China international with more than 200 appearances for his national team, he played a key role in the club’s successful era in the early 1990s, forming what Moerser SC remembers as its “Golden Duo” with Georg Grozer. Together, they helped the club win the German championship, two German Cup titles and a European Cup.

Club chairman Guido Lohmann paid tribute to Liu, remembering not only his achievements on the court but also his character, generosity and unwavering commitment to volleyball.

“Chang Cheng Liu was an outstanding world-class volleyball player and a top coach. Above all, however, we have lost one of the defining figures in the history of Moerser SC,” he said. He also highlighted Liu’s discipline, dedication to the sport and commitment to developing young volleyball talent, as well as the warmth and respect with which he treated everyone at the club.

His tribute also recalled Chang Cheng Liu’s extraordinary loyalty to Moerser SC. Only a few weeks ago, the two had sat together in the club chairman’s garden, discussing plans for the new season. When Lohmann unexpectedly asked Liu for help during the previous campaign, the coach arrived in Moers the very next day and went on to train the team on a voluntary basis for almost the entire second half of the season.

“That was Chang Cheng: he was always there when we needed him,” he recalled, describing Liu as a dear friend whose strength of character and loyalty were qualities rarely found.

Moerser SC has pledged to honour his memory and preserve his legacy within the club.
The team’s thoughts are with his family, to whom the club has offered its deepest condolences and wishes for strength and comfort during this difficult time.
As a mark of respect, Moerser SC will wear black armbands in their away match in Aachen and their home fixture against Münster.
