Nikola Grbić has not ruled out the possibility of one day returning to the Serbian national team, but any such move would depend on the right conditions. Speaking to Serbian media, the coach made it clear that his immediate future remains with Poland, where he still has two years left on his contract and continues to enjoy his position.

Grbić, who left the Serbian bench in 2019 after the team failed to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, was asked whether he could imagine taking charge of his home country’s national team again. His answer left the door open, while making clear that a return would require more than nostalgia or personal ambition.
He explained that the Serbian Volleyball Federation would need to share his vision, objectives and long-term direction, while also demonstrating a clear strategy and a willingness to stand by the agreements reached. Grbić stressed that he is no longer a coach at the beginning of his career: he knows what he wants and, just as importantly, what he is no longer prepared to accept.

There is, however, no suggestion of an imminent departure from Poland. His current contract runs for another two years, and discussions about a possible extension have not yet taken place.
The strength of his position is reflected in the extraordinary consistency of the Polish national team since he took charge in 2022.
Across ten major international tournaments, Poland have returned with a medal every single time: bronze in the 2022 VNL and silver at the World Championship that same year; gold in both the 2023 VNL and European Championship; silver at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and bronze in that year’s VNL; gold in the 2025 VNL and bronze at the World Championship; followed by another VNL title and a second consecutive European crown in 2026.

That record amounts to ten medals in ten tournaments, including five golds, two silvers and three bronzes. The Olympic silver in Paris was particularly significant, ending a 48-year wait for Poland’s men’s team to return to the Olympic podium.

For now, Grbić’s focus remains firmly on Poland and the next chapter of a highly successful project.
But his words offer an interesting glimpse into the future: a return to Serbia remains a possibility, provided that the sporting vision, institutional backing and mutual understanding are all in place.
