Brazil National Team knocked down Russia in straight sets (25:16, 25:22, 25:22) on Day 4 of the 2019 FIVB World Volleyball Cup in Japan and remained the only unbeaten team in the competition. The team coached by Renan Dal Zotto swept weakened Russia in Nagano and recorded the fourth victory in as many games, further isolating itself at the top of the standings.
Russia, despite playing without champions like Mikhailov, Volkov, Butko or Poletaev, had an initiative until the last moment of the second and the third set was unable to reject rivals who were led by Alan Souza (18 points, including 4 aces). Yaroslav Podlesnykh scored 13 for Russia who suffered the second straight defeat in the competition. Russia’s head coach Tuomas Sammelvuo will not count on Anton Semyshev until the last few matches due to player’s back injury that he sustained in the last match.
The path of Argentina at the World Cup resembles Russia’s, with two victories and then two defeats in a row. Poland downed South Americans by a 3-1 (27:29, 25:17, 25:18, 26:24) in Fukuoka to write down their third victory. Marcelo Méndez brought a young team to the World Cup, without Conte and De Cecco.
The entrance of Wilfredo León instead of Artur Szalpuk in the second set changed the course of the match into the favor of Poland, and he became the top scorer of the match with 20 points through an 80.9% attack (17/21)! Agustín Loser scored 17 points for Argentina.
Iran and Italy are also at 2-2 like Russia and Argentina but with their campaigns developing in a completely opposite direction.
USA are the closest followers to Brazil in the standings with a 3-1.
the USA’s top scorer in the victory against hosts Japan was Maxwell Holt and you will not often see that the middle blocker top-scored for one team at major world level tournaments. He set up 5 winning blocks and served 3 aces, adding 4 points from the attack.
Egypt lose their second match in a row: 2-3 against Canada.
