Italy: Verona inflict first home defeat to Modena, surreal performance for Abdel-Aziz – 41 points against Piacenza!
4 min read
Calzedonia Verona stunned one of the major title favorites Leo Shoes Modena on the road in Round 11 of the 2019/20 Italian Superlega Credem Banca regular season!
Bulgarian expert at the helm of the winners, Radostin Stoytchev, took some sort of revenge on Modena for some controversial dismissal in the spring of 2018. His team inflicted the first home defeat to Modena this season. The match was valid for Round 11 and lasted very long, two hours and 32 minutes, with Verona being ahead of two sets and with Modena bringing the match to the tie-break. For the first time since 2018, Stoytchev has returned to Modena’s Palapanini as opponent. At the end of the 2017/18 season, his collaboration with Modena ended in a bad way and now seeks for the resolution in the courtrooms. The Bulgarian was booed by more than 4,500 spectators in the hall, but at the end he celebrated a great victory. The Frenchman Stéphen Boyer scored 31 points for the winners, including 5 aces, while Enrico Cester made 6 winning blocks. Ivan Zaytsev scored 28 points for Modena, while American Maxwell Holt made 81% attack (13/16).

The Dutch bomber from Allianz Milano Nimir Abdel-Aziz, already awarded on wednesday during the match against Vibo Valentia as November’s MVP, staged a surreal display in the match against Gas Sales Piacenza. He scored 41 points in four sets! The opposite had as many as 60 kills and finished the encounter with a 60% attack success rate (36/60).
On the other matches, first victory on the road for Vibo Valentia on Latina’s (now Cisterna) court and Ravenna destroys Padova in front of their home fans.
