The next edition of the annual prestigious competition FIVB Volleyball Nations League will be played without the men’s and women’s national team of Italy. It will be the first time since the inception of the FIVB Volleyball Nations League (established in 1990 as the FIVB Men’s World League and in 1993 as the FIVB Women’s Grand Prix, both renamed in 2018).
The President of the Italian Volleyball Federation (Fipav) Pietro Bruno Cattaneo revealed this decision for the state radio Rai Radio 1 before he sent a letter to the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB).
In the men’s competition, Italy won 15 medals (8 golds). In the women’s competition, they won 7 medals in total.
The coronavirus pandemic that’s upsetting the world forced FIVB to postpone this year’s edition of the event until after the Olympic Games but given that the Olympics themselves were postponed for 2021, it’s yet unknown what will be the new decision of the FIVB.
