#Euro2021 Qualifiers: 3 teams enter last round chasing EuroVolley ticket!
2 min readSpain downed Latvia in the penultimate round of the Pool D qualifying tournament for the 2021 CEV Volleyball European Championship in four sets (27:25, 18:25, 28:26, 25:22).
They recovered from a shocking defeat from the hosts Cyprus and returned to the contention for the top spot in Pool D in Nicosia, i.e. the spot that guarantees the progression to the continental tournament.
So Spain inflicted the second defeat to Latvia in as many mutual matches, which might turn out as crucial before the last round tomorrow given that both sides are tied in the charts at 3-2 and 9 points. VĆctor RodrĆguez PĆ©rez was the top scorer with 16 points, while Alejandro Vigil added 4 winning blocks.
āWe started this match with the only goal of achieving a victory and nothing else,ā said Spanish middle blocker Borja Ruiz. āNow we want to win Sundayās match with Moldova as well in order to qualify for EuroVolley. There are no easy matches at this tournament and our only goal now is to secure another victory tomorrow with Moldova.ā
In the other match, Moldova had a chance to finish this round with the same score both in terms of win-loss record and points like Spain and Latvia but succumbed to Cyprus, who are really set to make things in the pool as much complicated as possible.
Tomorrow, Latvia will be playing hosts Cyprus and Spain will face Moldova: the result of these matches will determine who eventually finishes on top of the charts in the pool and will qualify for EuroVolley.
