Austria: Waldviertel still unbeaten after 15 AVL games! Weiz defeats Sokol in Zwischenrunde opener

2 min read

Also after 15 Austrian Volley League games played so far, Union Raiffeisen Waldviertel is still unbeaten! They won their top round opener against defending champions UVC Holding Graz in their Stadthalle Zwettl in only three sets, partially 25:21, 25:22, 25:23. The top scorers of today were Marek Sulc (15), Audrius Knasas and Daulton Sinoski with 12 each for the winners, and Sergej Drobnic (14) and Johannes Kratz (9) on the other side of the net.
Recall that Waldviertel was able to confidently win the basic round while today’s rivals only entered the competition after the first phase, and are still waiting for a set win after two top round games played so far.

But another game of Top Round was scheduled on this Epiphany day: the match between UVC Weberzeile Ried and VCA Amstetten NÖ.
However, due some suspicions of COVID-19 Omikron variant, the game had to be postponed on the instructions of the medical officer.

Waldviertel will play on the field of Aich/Dob already on Saturday evening, in a match that has already taken place three times this season, and in which they emerged victorious out of two, both in the ÖVV Cup round of 16 and in Mevza League.
Konrad Formela, a key player of the Bleiburg’s side, will no longer be in the squad on Saturday, as he was not ready to extend his expired vaccination certificate with a booster vaccination.
Currently he is not vaccinated and thus a health risk for himself and his teammates.
The second top round game next weekend will be played between Graz and Ried.

In the only Austrian Volley League intermediate round match of the week, current leaders TJ Sokol V / Post SV Wien lost suffered a 1-3 home defeat (25:19, 24:26, 21:25, 18:25) against an excellent VBC TLC Weiz, despite the absences of Leo Schober and Mark Kremer, left on the bench.
Top scorers of the match were Dominik Duchac (19) and Daniel Morgunov (13) on the home side, and Jakob Grasserbauer (18, 8 only in second set!) and Michael Pekar (17) for the winners, who reduced the gap with today’s rivals to five points.
