Italy: three points for Milano and Modena in Epiphany matches of a decimated Round 16

3 min read

After the advance played yesterday between Gioiella Prisma Taranto and Vero Volley Monza, other two matches of a decimated Round 16 of Italian Superlega CredemBanca (or, if you prefer, Round 3 of second leg) were played today.

In the afternoon, a great Allianz Milano defeats at home Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza by 3-1 (31:29, 23:25, 25:22, 25:18).
The first set was very balanced from start to finish, with the guests trying to escape on 14-17, forcing coach Piazza to ask for a time out. Milano shortens the distance and, with a great Jaeschke (9 points for him and 18 balls attacked only in this set), hooks the opponents 22-22. The teams respectively cancel 3 set balls each others, and Milano take the victory in the fourth attempt, 31-29, with a block from Mosca over Lagumdzija.

Great balance also in the second set.
Piacenza take a three points lead (12-15), taking advantage of a attack out by Patry, then replaced by Romanò on 16-18. 22-24 in favor of the guests: Ishikawa cancels the first set ball and it seems to do the same with the next one. Yes. Yes, It seems, because the referees assign the point to Milano (24-24) but the video check reverses the decision for an invasion of the home block (but were they really sure?) and therefore literally give the set to the opponents, 23-25.

In (once again) very balanced third set Milano tries to escape on 18-14, then Piacenza shortens the distance (19-18), but the hosts disagree: two points from Ishikawa are worth 21-19 and 23-20, respectively, and an attack by Chinenyeze worth the 25-22.

Milano in the decisive fourth set always maintains control of the game.
On the 14-9 coach Bernardi tries to stop the game by asking for a time out, but Milano does not give up and, despite a 0-3 dangerous break, makes the decisive blow and, with an attack out of Recine, can close 25-18 and celebrate three very important points for the charts.

Adis Lagumdzija, in Piacenza’s jersey, was the top scorer of the match with 24 points, all in attack, and a good 55%.
Thomas Jaeschke made 19 points for Milano, including 1 winning block and 1 ace, with 47% in attack, but gret performance from the middle-blockers: Barthelemy Chinenyeze made 15 points, 72% in attack and 2 winning blocks, while captain Matteo Piano, named MVP of the match, made 7 points, 73% in attack and 3 winning blocks.

On the other match of today, four sets victory also for Leo Shoes PerkinElmer Modena, on the field of Tonno Callipo Calabria Vibo Valentia (22:25, 25:21, 22:25, 22:25).
With 9th successive win in SuperLega (the 12th consecutive success counting European matches), the unstoppable Modena settle at vice leader’s position.
The Frenchman Earvin Ngapeth was Modena’s top scorer with 21 points, including 4 blocks, and was also awarded MVP.
