Poland: Jastrzębski still in race to defend title! Gdansk defeated in straight sets.

3 min read

Jastrzębski Węgiel managed to tie the series of the playoff quarter-finals of the 2021/22 Polish Plusliga against Trefl Gdańsk, by beating the rivals on the road in straight sets (23:25, 23:25, 14:25).
It was clear that the winners had a strong motivation to take revenge for losing 2-3 (after having a 2-0 lead) in Game 1. For now, it seems that a shock therapy after sacking the head coach Andrea Gardini bore fruits.

Under the command of Giolito and led by MVP Szymura (13 points, 69% in attack 62% efficiency and 2 blocks), on the field of injured (and absent) Clevenot, Jastrzebski start the game in a perfect way with a 6-12 lead. However the hosts managed to made a comeback until 16-16, and the decisive break came only to the end, with a block from Wisniewski on Mika, and an error from the service line of Laba, 23-25.
In second set is Trefl Gdansk to start better with a cospicuous 12-7 lead, but the hosts level the score taking advantage from a bad day of Lipinski, and with a great turn in serves of Toniutti who put down the ace of 12-12. 14-14 and coach Winiarski put on the field Sasak in place of Wlazly, but Hadrava’s block on Lipinski marks the 15-17, and Szymura counterattack the 15-18. Despite the hosts don’t give up, a debated videocheck reveal a Kampa’s net touch, that is worth the 22-24. An error of Lipiski from the service line close also the second set, 23-25.
In third set, coach Winiarski confirmed Sasak on the field, but Lipinski continues to struggle in attack and not only, and is replaced by Laba. Nothing to do, and Jastrzebski make 6 break in a row also thanks to the determinant serves of Hadrava (who recently renewed his contract with the polish club until 2024), and this is 7-15. Match and set are closed by Boyer.
