VNL 2022: Three irrilevant points for China. Iran to final 8! Poland smash The Netherlands

4 min read

Penultimate day of preliminary round of 2022 Volleyball Nations League, and in the first match played today in Pool 6 in Gdańsk, China defeat Bulgaria 3-1 (26:28, 25:23, 25:23, 25:17).
In a game between two teams who were no longer hopeful of making the Final 8, or threatened by relegation, the Asian side celebrated their third since the start of the competition and secured at least a top-13 finish for the team. Currently on a 3-8 win-loss record and nine points, China still have a shot at moving two places further up the standings, which will be closed on Sunday. Bulgaria, on the other hand, finished their campaign in 14th place on 2-10 and nine points.
China’s outside hitter Zhang Jingyin had a 62% success rate in attack and was the top scorer of the match with 18 points, including an ace and a block, followed by opposites Wang Jingyi of China and Denis Karyagin of Bulgaria with 15 points each.
The VNL’s best blocker so far, Bulgarian middle Svetoslav Gotsev added another four points to his tally, improving to a total of 35.

“I am so excited for this victory. I think we did very well today and accumulated precious experience from this match,” China’s Yuan Dangyi said after the game. “Every victory pushes us to do better. Thanks to all the fans who support us, we do our best. We must always do our best, whatever the match, whatever the score…”

In second match of the day, Iran have defeated Serbia in straight sets (35:33, 25:21, 25:12) to book a ticket for the Volleyball Nations League Final tournament.
Amirhossein Esfandiar led the winners in scoring with 17 points, Amin Esmaeilnezhad had 16, and Amir Toukhteh 13.
Aleksandar Atanasijevic (13), Miran Kujundic (10), and Pavle Peric (9) were the most prolific players for Serbia throughout the 88-minute contest.
In the last-round matchup in Gdansk on Sunday, Serbia will take on China, while Iran have ended their preliminary round.
Iran is now in seventh place with seven wins and five losses, while Serbia is currently in 11th place with four wins and seven defeats.

Close the picture a straight sets win (25:19, 25:23, 25:22) of Pool hosts Poland over The Netherlands, who are fighting for last spot for Finals togheter with Argentina and Slovenia. Despite their defeat to Poland, The Netherlands will still advance regardless of other results if they prevail over Italy.

The three teams will play for a place in Bologna on Sunday.
With Iran becoming the seventh team to earn a place at the Finals of the Volleyball Nations League 2022 on Saturday, there’s only one spot left to play for at the tournament later this month in Bologna, Italy.
These three teams currently occupy the eighth, ninth and tenth places in the standings and which team will compete in Final 8 will be decided
tomorrow, on Sunday, when the Preliminary Phase comes to an end in Osaka, Japan, and Gdansk, Poland.
The Netherlands could have booked their place in the Finals on Saturday, but reigning world champions Poland were too much for them, delaying a potential qualification. But it’s not over as, with six wins and 17 points, they are currently in eighth place and will remain in that position regardless of other results, if they manage to defeat European Champions Italy.
Argentina kept their dream of qualifying for the Finals alive for another day with their third consecutive four-set victory in Osaka, as they caused an upset by defeating reigning Olympic champions France 3-1 (25:22, 23:25, 25:23, 25:19) in the opening match of the day.
In order to overtake The Netherlands, the Tokyo bronze medallists, who have five wins and 17 points, will need to defeat the United States and hope for an Italian victory later in the day.
Slovenia, who didn’t play today, have the most complicated path to the VNL Finals. With five wins and just 15 points, they need to beat Poland 3-0 or 3-1 in Gdansk and hope that the Dutch lose to Italy in three or four sets and that Argentina fall to the United States by any score.

At the bottom of the standings, Australia have been confirmed as the 16th-place finishers of the competition and will need to compete at this year’s Volleyball Challenger Cup to try to return to the VNL in 2023. Australia, who have just one win and two points, still have a match to play, but even if they sweep France, they’d still rank behind Canada, who have two victories and six points.
