The Cuba National Team defeats hosts Canada in just three sets (25:17, 25:17, 25:23) in the final to lift the trophy of the 2022 Pan-American Volleyball Cup organized in the city of Gatineau, Québec.
Cuba ended the competition unbeaten and won the gold medal in the 15th edition of the competition.
At the Centre Slush Puppie in Gatineau, the team led by coach Nicolás Vives swept the home side, who couldn’t find a solution to stop the powerful attacks of the Caribbeans, fighting off a late attempt by Canada to extend the match to one more set.
Opposite Jesús Herrera of Cuba, who won their fourth overall gold in the Pan-American Cup, was the top scorer of the match with 15 points, while his teammate Osniel Melgarejo earned the MVP of the tournament award.
Cuba went through the entire event without losing a single set and previously beat national teams of the Dominican Republic, Chile (twice), and also the United States, who took third place after beating Chile by 3-1 (25:16, 25:15, 22:25, 25:21).
Cuba, that also recently earned a place in next year’s FIVB Volleyball Nations League by winning the FIVB Challenger Cup and, less than a month ago, claimed the title also in the Pan-American Cup NORCECA Final Six, thus secured a berth in the 2023 Pan American Games.
Now, their next challenge will be the FIVB World Championship, scheduled from August 26 to September 11 in Slovenia and Poland.
