2022 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship continued today in Katowice with an incredible news: the Bulgaria National Team was ingloriously eliminated from the competition!
Bulgaria, the team that was considered to have the quality to interfere in the battle for the highest positions is out of the tournament after the group stage….thanks to Mexico.
The players around Nikolay Jeliazkov lost to Mexico at tie break (20:25, 25:20, 25:23, 23:25, 18:16) in their last match of Pool C. Thus, they suffered their third defeat in as many games and recorded their lowest ranking in history.
Bulgaria took only two sets in the competition, and today, in the end, they even wasted 4 match points. Even though this match was only a matter of prestige for them, Mexico spoiled Bulgaria’s plans for an obligatory 3-0 win and a possible bigger point difference in order to keep even some minimal chances to be among the four best third-placed teams across all pools.
Diego González put down an impressive 33 points for Mexico, including 4 aces, while his teammate Josué López scored the same number of points from the service line, and Axel Téllez made 5 blocks. Tsvetan Sokolov was the most prilific player for Bulgaria with 24 points.
The Poland National Team closed the group stage of the 2022 FIVB Volleyball World Championships with all three victories, defeating the USA this evening .
In the knockout stage of the competition, according to the new controversial rule of the FIVB, Poland will be seeded as No. 1. In the last game of Pool C in Katowice, one of the two co-hosts defeated the USA 3-1 (23:25, 25:21, 25:19, 25:21).
Before the match, both teams were guaranteed promotion to the 1/8 finals but, thanks to this victory, Nikola Grbic’s side topped the group, and the rivals took second place in the charts. The third place went to the Mexicans, who surprisingly defeated Bulgaria 3-2, but certainly won’t be among the four best third-placed sides overall.
Either way the match between Poland and USA was the big match of the group stage so far and also a direct battle for supremacy in the pool. However, this match was of greater importance for the Americans, whose seeding in the Round of 16 depended on today’s result. Nevertheless, Poland didn’t intend to disappoint their own audience, and their job was slightly easier given the absence of USA’s starting setter Micah Christenson. According to some reports, he’s injured but it’s not clear whether or not he’ll be able to play in the knockout phase. Bartosz Kurek was the top scorer among the winners with 20 points, while Torey DeFalco scored 16 for the United States, and David Smith made 4 blocks.
