In second match of the day (in first, Slovenia defeat Germany 3-1), Italy beat Cuba in four sets in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and flies to the quarter-finals of FIVB World Championship 2022.
The European champions had to work very hard to overtake the world volleyball’s force in the process of regaining such status.
There was much continuity in the play of the winners in key moments to make the difference and that allow to continue the adventure in Poland and Slovenia.
The Caribbeans made as many as 44 unforced errors and the majority of them when having to chase the rival’s advantage, such as in the fourth set.
Yuri Romanò was Italy’s most prolific player in the match, scoring 14 points, while Jesús Herrera was the author of 23 points for Cuba.
Despite the loss, Cuba dominated Italy in attack (52 to 39) and aces (three to two), losing only the blocking duel, which was won by the Italians by 12 to five. The Caribbeans’ 44 errors to Italy’s 28 were, however, the main difference between the two sides.
With the victory, the Italians have guaranteed they will at least match their last World Championship campaign, in 2018, when they co-hosted the event together with Bulgaria and fell in the quarterfinals.
Italy now will face the winners between France and Japan, who will play each other on Monday, September 5, in Ljubljana, at 21.00 local time (19.00 GMT), in quarterfinals.
