WCH 2022: a super Poland is first finalist! Brazil defeated at tie break!

2 min read

First semifinals in Katowice ends with roar and joy of 12,000 fans, as Poland beats Brazil to go to third successive final!

It was another great match and an absolute thriller by the Polish players.
After a battle lasted five sets, just like in the quarter-finals against the USA, they defeated Brazil, partially 23:25, 25:18, 25:20, 21:25, and 15:12, and will play in the final of the 2022 FIVB World Championship.
Due to losing tonight, Brazil will miss their first final of the World Champs since 2002 and, in the last two, they lost to Poland!

The players around Renan Dal Zotto were highly motivated to settle the scores with the rivals, not wanting their final streak to be interrupted.
But in the hot, very hot, Spodek hall in Katowice they failed to finish off Nikola Grbić’s team in front of 12,000 rival supporters.
Thus, Poland will play for the third gold in a row in the competition. Brazil was very much shaken when Ricardo Lucarelli left the court due to injury in the fourth set with the result of 22-18. They took this set, and Brazil had also 12-10 in the tie-break and a counterattack to reach, most likely, an unattainable advantage of +3.
However a monster block stopped Yoandy Leal’s spike, Poland earned 5 points in a row and scheduled the final duel with an Italy who, in second semifinal, smashed Slovenia in just three sets.

Poland’s opposite and captain Bartosz Kurek top-scored the winning side with 24 points, including 21 spikes at a success rate of 53% in attack, two kill blocks and an ace, while Jakub Kochanowski made 4 blocks. Their teammates Kamil Semeniuk and Aleksander Sliwka added another 23 and 19, respectively, while Brazilian outside hitter Ricardo Lucarelli was his team’s most prolific player with 18 points before getting injured.
