A super-Italy smashed a really disappointing Slovenia and made it through to the final of the 2022 FIVB Volleyball World Championship against defending champions Poland (who defeated Brazil in an amazing battle lasted five sets) tomorrow at 9 p.m. local time.
Italy vs Poland was marked by a couple of interesting facts: Slovenia was in the final for the first time ever, while Italy had 12 rookies at the World Championship!
It will be the 28th encounter between the European giants in major international events and, Poland have been more successful so far, with 16 wins.
Either way, Italy played another great match at the competition, by beating the rivals in just three sets (25:21, 25:22, 25:21) to reach the final. They literally dominated Slovenia, outscoring their continental rivals in attack (41 to 36), benefiting from more errors (24 to 17), tying in aces (two to each side) and ranking slightly behind in blocks (eight to nine). Slovenia had never really worried the European champions, in this semi-final. Actually, they didn’t play at all.
Since 1998, Italy hasn’t reached the final in World Championship, and during these 24 years hasn’t won a single medal!
Daniele Lavia led Italy to the win as top scorer with 15 points and, hitting at a 47.84% efficiency rate, he produced all of his points in attack. Opposite Yuri Romanò came right behind with 12 (ten attacks, one block, one ace), while outside hitter Alessandro Michieletto added another nine (eight kills, one block). Simone Anzani set up 4 blocks.
