Italy: Milano down Modena! Monza wreck titleholders, Trento puts an end to Cisterna invincibility, three points for Perugia
4 min read
Round 4 of italian SuperLega Credem Banca has been completed today.
In first match of the day, Allianz Milano conquered the iconic PalaPanini at the end of a long-lasting duel against the hosts of Valsa Group Modena.
In a marathon with lot of errors on both sides and many reversals of the score, Roberto Piazza’s guys earned a victory of 2-3 (26:24, 21:25, 25:21, 23:25, 14:16), although Modena were ahead 2-1 in sets and 4 points up in the fourth set (21-17), so one step away from success. Milano overcame the fall in concentration to tie at 2-2 in sets before prevailing in the tie-break’s overtime, even though without two starters, captain Matteo Piano and Japanese superstar Yuki Ishikawa, at full disposal (but they entered as backups on several occasions).
French opposite Jean Patry scored 21 points for Milano (42% in attack, 3 aces, 1 winning block and MVP award), while the Turkish opposite Adis Lagumdžija grounded 28 for Modena, including 4 aces.
The day continued with a sensation. Vero Volley Monza was easy prey in the first three rounds of this edition of Italian Volleyball Championship, but today resurrected to sweep the titleholders!
In a day to remember, they have proven capable of taking the first victory of the season, and they did it against one of the most difficult teams in the championship, the defending champions Cucine Lube Civitanova. The encounter ended 3-0 (25:20, 25:23, 25:12) for the guys coached by Massimo Eccheli, able to play an amazing performance and break a streak of three defeats in the first three rounds.
The German opposite Georg Grozer scored 20 points among the winners, while the Canada national team member Stephen Maar served as many as 7 aces, greatly contributing to this result, and he made also 4 winning blocks. The Belarusian outside hitter Uladzislau Davyskiba had a 70% reception (10 digs, 40% perfect). The only double-digit player for Lube was Ivan Zaytsev with 14 points. For his team, this was second defeat in five matches played. Not such a promising start in order to defend the title…
Itas Trentino won another marathon and managed to defeat Top Volley Cisterna 3-2 3-2 (20:25, 25:18, 35:33, 21:25, 15:13), ending their own three-game losing streak in a match whose third set lasted for as many as 44 minutes and ended with an impressive score of 35-33!
At the same time, Angelo Lorenzetti’s guys broke Cisterna’s invincibility.
The Bulgarian veteran Matey Kaziyski, at 38-year-old, had another super performance scoring 30 points for the winning side, while Croatian Petar Djirlić tallied 27 on Cisterna’s jersey.
Close the picture the match involving vice-champions Sir Safety Susa Perugia who, first struggled, and then down Pallavolo Padova to remain the only undefeated side in the competition.
The match ended in four sets (25:21, 12:25, 19:25, 18:25) and, even though their Cuban-Polish superstar Wilfredo León was given a rest by the head coach Andrea Anastasi, Perugia managed to overcome 0-1 in sets, avoiding the same faith of Modena and Lube (both defeated at tie break by these rivals).
The Luxembourgish-Italian Kamil Rychlicki scored 23 points through a 72% attack (18/25, 1 error) the winners, while Pole Kamil Semeniuk served 5 aces. Argentine-Italian middle blocker, Sebastian Solé had 91% attack (10/11), while Ukrainian Oleh Plotnytskyi made 70% reception (20 digs, 55% perfect).
Japanese Ran Takahashi was the most prolific player for Padova with 16 points.
