A big upset happened in the Round 12 of 2022/23 Polish Plusliga, that continued today with other three games.
Jastrzębski Węgiel have been going from victory to victory since the beginning of this season, but also beyond. However today the leaders were stopped by a great Cuprum Lubin, which are in the lower half of the table, and lost 3-1 (25:22, 21:25, 21:25, 22:25).
The vice-champions were on the run and won 11 matches in a row in PlusLiga, without suffering a single defeat, but they were also undefeated in the duel for the Polish Super Cup and in two matches of the CEV Champions League. By Saturday, there was no team able to stop them. An extension of the streak seemed very real, as Jastrzębski won eight matches in a row against these rivals!
And on Saturday, the side from Jastrzębie-Zdrój won the first set 25-22 after which it seemed they’ll be 15-0 overall, but the guests gathered strength afterward to surprise the super favorites and took the next three sets, earning the fifth win in addition to seven losses.
Paweł Pietraszko, with also 4 winning blocks and Remigiusz Kapica were the most prolific players in the winning side with 13 points each, but there were as many as five players in double digits on the winning side! Kamil Szymura made 82% reception (17 digs, 29% perfect)F while Frenchman Stéphen Boyer scored 12 points for Jastrzębski.
In first game of the day, actually a big match, Grupa Azoty ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle needed five sets to defeat PGE Skra Bełchatów on the road 2-3 (25:14, 23:25, 25:21, 23:25, 9:15). Dmytro Pashytskyy was named MVP of the match with 17 points, 80% in attack and 73% efficiency, and 4 winning block.
Close the picture LUK Lublin who defeated at home Ukrainian side Barkom Każany Lwów with the same result (25:22, 24:26, 25:19, 24:26, 15:10), led by a good Wojciech Włodarczyk who ended the game as top scorer with 23 points, 51% in attack and 3 of his team 11 winning blocks. Julius Firkal grounded 21 points for Barkom, but with only 43% in attack.
