Poland: ZAKSA down leaders Jastrzębski at tie break! Three points for Warszawa

2 min read

Round 15 of 2022/23 Plusliga continued today, on Sunday, with other two games.

PlusLiga’s biggest derby didn’t disappoint the supporters’ expectations!
After a five-set battle between the champions Grupa Azoty ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle and the vice-champions, Jastrzębski Węgiel, of the competition, with numerous twists and turns, the victory was earned by ZAKSA, 2-3 (20:25, 25:19, 25:21, 22:25, 11:15).
All volleyball fans in Poland got used to the exciting clashes between these two sides, It was no different today. In the decisive set, the titleholders kept their cool, and Jastrzębski failed to reclaim the lead in the table, which now belongs to Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie.
Interestingly, in the previous season, the two teams met each other 10 times, and the Kędzierzyn-Koźle side, who later even confirmed the title of the CEV Champions League winners, established a clear dominance with eight wins. This season, however, the cards have turned. Before the start of the 15th round, it was the Jastrzębie-Zdrój team that led PlusLiga since the start and, therefore, was the favorite of the clash of the giants, although they recently lost twice in PlusLiga and, with today’s result, they recorded their third defeat in the last four matches.
Both teams, however, suffer from a plague of injuries: Wiśniewski, Gladyr, and Toniutti are out, while ZAKSA have similar issues with Hubert, Kaczmarek, and Stępień not at the disposal of coach Tuomas Sammelvuo.
Bartłomiej Kluth was the man of the match for ZAKSA with 25 points, while Ukrainian Dmytro Pashytskyy recorded 4 blocks. The Frenchman Stéphen Boyer in Jastrzębski’s jersey matched Kluth’s scoring output, while Boyer’s compatriot Trévor Clévenot made 6 blocks.

In the other match of the day, Projekt Warszawa defeat Trefl Gdańsk 3-0 (27:25, 25:22, 25:20).
Artur Szalpuk ended the game as top scorer with 20 points through 58% in attack, while Piotr Nowakowski also contributed with 4 winning blocks.
