Italy: Lube, Modena, Piacenza and Trento KO! All easy only for leaders Perugia

5 min read

After a super victory of Gioiella Prisma Taranto over WithU Verona in yesterday’s advance, a crazy Round 15 or, if you prefer, Round 4 of second leg of 2022/23 Italian Superlega CredemBanca continued today with all the other games…mostly against all odds!

In order: Cucine Lube Civitanova, the reigning champions, suffered their sixth defeat in the competition, and so many setbacks in this phase of the season havenā€™t happened to them in years!
Vero Volley Monza returned home from the Eurosuole Forum in Civitanova Marche with a heavy load of three points after defeating titleholders in four sets, partially 25:22, 33:35, 20:25 and 15:25.
It was a well-deserved victory for the guys around Massimo Eccheli, now seventh in the standings, over the reigning champions, who were wounded on several occasions in the season thus far.
The second set, which they took after a 43-minute battle by 35-33 to tie at 1-1 in sets, basically directed the course of the rest of the match. Monza, led by Canadian Stephen Maar, author of an amazing performance made of 27 points including 4 aces, and Gabriele Di Martino (four blocks), prevailed in the next two sets, inflicting the sixth defeat on now third-placed Lube.
Ivan Zaytsev and Daniele Sottile didnā€™t play for the favorites, and best scorer today was Puerto Rican-American Gabriel GarcĆa with 15 points, while Simone Anzani set up four blocks.
Interestingly, Monza proved to be Lubeā€™s nightmare given they beat them in the first half of the regular season too!

But we also saw an amazing victory 3-1 (23:25, 30:28, 25:18, 25:21) for Allianz Milano who, on their home court broke Valsa Group Modenaā€™s winning streak of five games in the competition.
Thanks to defeats of other favorites, Andrea Gianiā€™s guys remained in second place but it is definitely in crisis given that they lost another match a few days ago, in the CEV Cup in Germany.
Japanese Yuki Ishikawa and Cuban Osniel Mergarejo, 47 points in two, helped now sixth-placed Milano pocket three very precious points for the standings, while AugustĆn Loser was decisive in blocking, as he had seven of the teamā€™s 21 stuffs. Yes, 21!!!) On the other side, Tommaso Rinaldi scored 21 points.
For Milano, this was third consecutive win in the competition after a clear 3-0 on the field of last-placed Siena, a week ago, and the majestic success on the field of Lube Civitanova, in Italian Cup quarterfinals.

Another upset?
Ok! Top Volley Cisterna moved up to the playoff zone by surprisingly defeating fourth-placed Itas Trentino 1-3 (22:25, 25:17, 24:26, 31:33)! Croatian Petar Djirlić was unstoppable on the winning side, grounding ad many as 37 points, not by chance, top scorer in Superlega, while Alessandro Michieletto scored 27 points for Trentino. After 0-2 deficit in sets, good performance also for middle blockers Lisinac m (14 points and 82% in attack, 3 blocks and 2 aces) and Podrascanin (13 through 75%, two blocks and a ace).
Either way, Trento gained a very important point for the standings, and now the guys around head coach Angelo Lorenzetti are third,
with the same number of points of Lube.

And, if this wasn’t enough, the last-placed Emma Villas Aubay Siena completed the night of surprises…as they succeeded at the end of a very tight match against fifth-placed Gas Sales Bluenergy Piacenza still without Leal and Lucarelli), obtaining their third victory of the season.
Giulio Pinali 25 points for the winners, while Fabio Ricci made four blocks. Cuban Robertlandy SimĆ³n topped Piacenzaā€™s scorers with 25 points, including five blocks.
The game ended by 1-3 (22:25, 25:17, 24:26, 31:33).

On the other hand, Sir Safety Susa Perugiaā€™s march continued uninterrupted, with an impressive winning streak: in fact, this was 26th win of the season in as many matches played in the various competitions!
And Perugia was the only one among the favorites that survived today this cursed Round 15.
In Superlega, it was their 15th success, with the primacy of the competition maintained with full points and top-seed for the playoffs in sights. The game against Pallavolo Padova, now second-to-last, ended in straight sets, partially 25:22, 25:21 and 25:21…
