Challenge Cup: Tel Aviv and Panathinaikos take first steps towards Final!

1 min read

Both Semifinals first leg of 2022/23 CEV Challenge Cup were played today.

Israel’s Maccabi Yeadim Tel Aviv, undefeated so far in the competition, needed four sets to take another win, and this time the victim is A.J. Fonte Bastardo from Portugal, 3-1 (24:26, 25:21, 25:18, 25:23), despite a super performance of an almost unstoppable Edson Valencia Gonzalez, who ended the game with 33 points through 73% (!!!) in attack, including two blocks and 2 aces.
Alexander Safonov tallied 20 points for the winners, while Viacheslav Batchkala also contributed with 6 winning blocks.

The all-greek derby between Olympiacos Piraeus and Panathinaikos Athens ended in four sets (25:21, 21:25, 23:25, 24:26) in favor of the visiting side. Czech-Italian Jiri Kovar (among the winners) and Slovenian Tonček Stern were the top scorers of the game with 26 and 25 points respectively.
