European Golden League: Final is Türkiye-Ukraine! Czech Republic and hosts Croatia ko

Final Four of 2023 European Golden League started today with both semifinals between Türkiye, Czech Republic, Croatia, and Ukraine.

In the first clash, Türkiye needed five sets to down Czech Republic (22:25, 25:17, 19:25, 25:23, 15:12) to get revenge for a last year’s final where they also met with the same rivals but, in the end, lost and ended the competition in second place.
The game was wery balanced, with both sides ended the game with almost same numbers: 13 to 14 winning blocks, 52% to 50% in attack, and 5 aces to 6.
For Türkiye, as many as 6 players ended the game in double digit: Burutay Subasi, 17 points, 1 block and 62% in attack, followed by Adis Lagumdzija and Efe Bayram, with 16 and 15 respectively, Bedirhan Bülbül who also contributed with 12, and Kaan Gürbüz and Faik Günes, with 10 each. On the other side of the net Marek Sotola, top scorer of the match, scorer 23 points through 48% in attack and 3 winning blocks while Lukas Vasina had 16 with the same percentage in attack, 3 winning blocks too and 1 ace.

Türkiye will face on Sunday Ukraine, who down the hosts Crotoa with the score of 1-3 (23:25, 25:21, 21:25, 12:25).
These teams played against each other in the Pool phase this year and Ukraine won twice by 3-0, but this was also the re-match of the last year’s match for the third place in the competition where Croatia celebrated a 3-2 win.
Ukraine started strongly in the match and in the beginning, they already had a four-point advantage, 3-7. However, in front of their home fans in Zadar Arena, Croatia managed to get close to the rivals and at 22-23 everything was still open. But it was Ukraine who took the first set by 23-25. The hosts won first set, but then collapsed, above all in the last one, ended with a clear 12-25.
The winners were better from the service line with 7 aces to 2, 4 from top scorer Vasil Tupchii, who ended the game with 18 points through 58% in attack.

Tomorrow, on Sunday, at 5 pm the match between Czech Republic and Croatia will take place for the third place and the bronze medal while, at 8 pm the Gran Finale between Türkiye and Ukraine.
