With CEV Eurovolley 2023 Pool stage almost over, predictions respected in Pool A in Ancona, Italy.
In first game of the day, Serbia secured a straight-set victory 25:16, 25:23, 25:22) over Estonia. This was their third victory in the competition, affirming their position in the Round of 16, gearing up for an anticipated face-off with Germany tomorrow.
Dražen Luburić led the winners with 18 points through 60% in attack, while Estonia’s Mart Tammearu ended the game with 11 points.
In the evening, Italy marked its fourth win in as many games by overpowering Switzerland 3-0 (25:19, 25:23, 25:15) at the bustling PalaRossini arena.
In front of an enthusiastic crowd of 4,036 cheering them on, they managed to remain dominant despite Switzerland’s resilience, above all in an exciting 2nd set.
Thanks to this victory, Italy remain firmly at the helm of Pool A, boasting 4 wins and a total of 12 points. The winnners’ most prolific players are Yuri Romano who scored 15 points through 52% in attack, Daniele Lavia with 13, and Alessandro Michieletto who also contributed with 12. Meanwhile, for the Swiss side, Luca Urlich ended the game as top scorer with 10 points, and he was the only player in double digit.
In Pool B, Slovenia dominates Croatia and secures Top Spot in EuroVolley Pool Stage!
In a commanding performance, they proved their supremacy by defeating the rivals in just three sets (25:17, 25:18, 25:14) and after only 74 minutes of play.
This victory marked their fourth consecutive win, providing them with an enviable record of 12 points, solidifying their position as the group leaders.
Croatia, in the wake of a victory over Bulgaria, today never entered to the court, also due the absence of their recent hero Marko Sedlacek. Their early resistance in the first two sets was swiftly canceled by the Slovenian force, who then secured the third set by a conspicuous 11-point margin.
In another Pool B match in Varna, Ukraine managed to defeat Finland in a close-fought 5-set duel (25:23, 25:17, 23:25, 24:26, 15:13).
This was their first victory of the tournament, keeping their hopes alive for the next phase.
A win against Spain in their final Pool B match on Tuesday will earn them the last spot. If not, Spain itself will claim it.
Meanwhile, Finland concludes their EuroVolley journey with 1 win and 4 points.
