Eurovolley2023: Pool D is over. France to the top! Portugal, Romania & Türkiye also qualified. All easy for the Netherlands & Poland in Pool C
2 min read
France, the current Olympic gold medalist, topped Pool D in the group stage of EuroVolley 2023 with four victories and just a single but resounding defeat against Romania.
In their last game, they destroyed Greece with a clear 0-3 (19:25, 22:25, 17:25) win.
Timothée Carle was the best of the match with 16 points, while Jean Patry also contributed with 9 points. On the other side of the net, Dimitrios Mouchlias and Athanasios Protopsaltis both scored 11 points.
Meanwhile, in another Pool D match, Türkiye triumphed over hosts Israel with the same result, 3-0 (25:23, 25:13, 25:17) advancing to the next stage too. Top scorers for Türkiye are Adis Lagumdzija with 15 points and Emre Savas with 12 including 1 block, 1 ace and 91% in attack, while Tamir Hershko for Israel scored 15 points too.
With these results, Portugal clinched the second spot in Pool D, followed closely by Romania in third.
In the Round of 16 in Varna, Bulgaria, France is set to face Ukraine, while Türkiye will play against Pool B’s top team, Slovenia.
Croatia will compete against Romania, and Portugal will go head-to-head with Bulgaria in other Round of 16 matchups.
About Pool C in Skopje, that will come into an end tomorrow together with Pool A in Italy, prediction respected with two straight sets wins for The Netherlands and Poland.
The Netherlands easily defeat Pool hosts North Macedonia with clear 3-0 (25:19, 25:19, 25:16) with 13 winning blocks and 14 points from top scorer Nimir Abdel Aziz.
Thanks to the victory against Denmark (25:23, 25:9, 25:20), Poland concluded the Pool to the top and will face Belgium in Round of 16
in Bari, Italy.
Only a far-fetched defeat in straight sets in last game scheduled tomorrow against modest Montenegro could reopen the chapter of qualification.
And Italy, leaders of Pool A, more likely will face Czech Republic or North Macedonia in Round of 16…
