Road to Paris 2024: all results of Day 2! Remarkable win for Egypt against Japan in Pool B, 2nd success for Canada in Pool C and the others…

Men’s FIVB Road to Paris Volleyball Qualifier continued also in October 1st in Japan, China and Brazil not without upsets.

In Pool B in Tokyo, Egypt stages a remarkable victory against hosts Japan, while Slovenia, Serbia, and USA secured straight-sets triumphs in this Day 2 of the thrilling tournament.
In details, Egypt delivered a stunning performance, defeating favorite Japan in a thrilling five-set match, 2-3 (25:14, 25:10, 23:25, 23:25, 13:15). Japan initially dominated the game with clear results in the first two sets, but Egypt executed a phenomenal turnaround from the third set onwards to take a well-deserved victory. Reda Haikal with 20, Masoud Mohamed with 11 and young Abdelrahman Elhossiny with 10 points were decisive for Egypt’s victory while, on the other side of the net, Yuki Ishikawa and Yuji Nishida were the top scorers with 24 points each, while Ran Takahashi added 16 points.
Earlier games in Tokyo saw Slovenia celebrated a hard-fought 3-0 (28:26, 30:28, 25:22) win against Türkiye, with Rok Mozic leading the scores with 20 points. Türkiye displayed a great resilience, especially thanks to the Lagumdzija brothers, but couldn’t surpass the rivals, who were better in the decisive parts of the game.
Serbia, rebounding from a loss to the same Türkiye, secured a 3-0 (25:21, 25:16, 25:21) victory over Tunisia, with Drazen Luburic scoring a match-high 18 points. Oussama Ben Romdhane emerged as the top scorer for Tunisia with 16 points.
Close the picture Pool favorites USA, who dominated over Finland with a clear 3-0 (25:17, 25:15, 25:17) win, leading the current charts.
Torey Defalco ended the game as top scorer with 14 points, while Matthew Anderson and Jeffrey Jendryk also reached double digits with 13 and 10 points respectively.

In Pool C, Canada secures second consecutive upsets in as many games, while The Netherlands, Poland, Belgium also claim victories.
Thus Canada continued to surprise in the tournament, this time defeating Argentina, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medallists, marking their second success after their win against the Netherlands. Canada, ranked 13th by the FIVB World Ranking, delivered a four-sets victory, 1-3 (25:27, 22:25, 25:23, 15:25).
Eric Loeppky ended the game with 15 points, helping to secure the 25-15 victory in the fourth set against sixth-ranked rival, while his teammates Stephen Maar and Arthur Szwarc were top scorers with 16 points each.
On the other games of the day, the Netherlands rebounded from their loss to Canada, achieving a 3-0 (25:19, 25:19, 25:16) win against Mexico with Nimir Abdel-Aziz absolute top scorer with 20 points, asserting his leadership as the captain and bomber.
Poland, the world leaders according to the FIVB World Ranking, overcame an early challenge from Bulgaria to close the match 3-0, partially 26:24, 25:20 and 25:21. Bartosz Bednorz was decisive in Poland’s turnaround and eventual control of the following sets, scoring 16 points on the day of setter Grzegorz Łomacz’s birthday!
Belgium ended the day by overcoming hosts China, 1-3 (18:25, 25:22, 19:25, 17:25), with captain Sam Deroo leading in scoring with 25 points, closely followed by Ferre Reggers who added another 24, establishing their dominance.

In Pool A in Brazil, the hosts struggled more than expected against a resilient Czech Republic, Germany secured second win in as many games while Italy and Ukraine closed their respective clashes in straight sets.

The hosts had a tough challenge as they were stretched to five sets by Czech Republic, but eventually triumphed at tie break (22:25, 25:16, 25:20, 21:25, 16:14).
The man of the match was Darlan Souza, who had a 23-point performance.
Italy, the reigning world champions, continued their winning streak and showcased their dominance against Qatar with a clear 3-0 (25:19, 25:20, 25:19). The match saw an impressive 14-point contribution from outside hitter Alessandro Michieletto, and 9 from middle blocker Gianluca Galassi.
In another exciting match, Germany, led by the experienced 38-year-old opposite György Grozer’s 24 points, defeated Cuba 3-1 (21:25, 25:14, 25:22, 25:15). His performance included 22 kills, a block, and an ace.
Ukraine, in the final match of the day, celebrated their first win, overpowering Iran with a 3-0 (25:19, 25:22, 25:17) victory.
The man of the match was opposite Vasyl Tupchii, who notched up 16 points, closely followed by outside hitter Tymofii Poluian with 15.
