Road to Paris 2024: sixth victory in a row! Poland qualified! (And the others of Day 6)
3 min read
FIVB Road to Paris Olympic Qualifiers, divided in three Pools between Brazil, Japan and China is almost over with the penultimate day, Day 6, played on Saturday.
All verdict on last day, on Sunday.
In Pool A in Brazil, now three teams boast four victories: hosts Brazil, Italy and Cuba.
Brazil today down Iran as predicted, 3-0 (25:19, 25:20, 25:23), and tomorrow they’ll face Cuba, who today defeated World Champions Italy with the score of 1-3 (22:25, 25:21, 25:27, 27:29).
Leaders Germany easily defeated Qatar 3-0 (25:15, 25:20, 25:16) while, in clash between two already eliminated teams, Ukraine beat Czech Republic by 3-1 (25:19, 25:15, 23:25, 25:20).
In Pool B in Tokyo, Japan, all easy for Finland, who down Tunisia in three sets 0-3 (19:25, 23:25, 15:25), led by Marttila, top scorer with 13 points, followd by Ben Romdhane who scored 11 on the losing side.
Victory and three points also for Türkiye over Egypt, 3-1 (25:21, 25:18, 20:25, 25:23), led by outside hitter Gürbüz who scored as many as 29 points in just four sets.
No problem for leaders USA, who registered a clear 3-0 (25:18, 25:18, 25:17) against Serbia with 13 points from middle blocker Holt, including 2 winning blocks and 4 aces in a win that is worth a ticket for Paris while nothing to do for Serbia, out from the Olympic Games for third time in a row.
Qualified also Japan thanks to the straight sets win over Slovenia, 3-0 (25:21, 25:22, 25:18): 15 points for Ishikawa, 13 each for Nishida and Takahashi (with 3 aces).
Poland‘s Nikola Grbic, on the Day 6 of FIVB Road to Paris Olympic Qualifiers, celebrated the sixth win in as many games in XI’An, China, that is worth the pass for Olympic Games one day in advance in Pool C.
For European Champions this will be the 11th presence and, after the Gold Medal back in 1976, their goal will be to improve their last fifth places in a row!
Even if The Netherlands won first set, they managed to close the game by 3-1 (21:25, 25:17, 25:22, 29:27), and the 22 points from Ter Horst weren’t enough.
For the winners, Leon was decisive with 21 points including 2 winning blocks and 3 aces.
On the same Pool Belgium overturn the predictions and down Canada with the score of 1-3 (14:25, 25:22, 28:30, 16:25) to take the second place in the standings, right at the expense of the rivals. Great performance for captain Sam Deroo who ended the game with 20 points while, for Canada, the 19 points by Stephen Maar were not enough.
Predictions respected, on the other hand, for Bulgaria, who easily down Mexico in three sets (23:25, 19:25, 22:25), led by Aparuhov author of 21 points (with one block and one ace) and Nikolov’s 16.
Argentina, in the lasy game of the day, defeatd China only at tie break (25:22, 22:25, 19:25, 25:20, 15:12).
