Poland: winning debut for ZAKSA, Lubin and Olsztyn!

After the successes of titleholders Jastrzębski Węgiel (3-0 on the field of Stal Nysa) and Luk Lublin (3-0 at home against Czarni Radom), the two games that officially opened the 2023/24 Plusliga, today other three games of Round 1 were played.

In the first game of the day, Grupa Azoty ZAKSA Kędzierzyn-Koźle defeated PGE GiEK Skra Bełchatów by 3-1 (25:20, 25:19, 22:25, 25:20) in a Plusliga classic, with excellent performances of the three National Team members bombers: Lukasz Kaczmarek ended the game as top scorer with 18 points to his name, all in attack, through 69% efficiency, closely followed by Bartosz Bednorz who also contributed with 17 (54% in attack and 3 blocks), and Aleksander Sliwka, who scored 14 points through 59% in attack, including 1 block and 3 aces. On the other side of the net Romania’s national team member and vice-champions of France with Chaumont Adrian Aciobăniței was the most prolific player with 16 points.
Winning debut also for a great KGHM Cuprum Lubin who, after closing a never ending first set lasted 43 minutes, managed to down Barkom Każany Lwów in straight sets (37:35, 25:20, 25:17), led by MVP and top scorer Jake Hanes, author of 17 points including 2 aces and 2 winning blocks and 45% in attack, and Alexander Berger (16 points, 2 aces, 2 blocks and 58% in attack).
In the evening, Indykpol AZS Olsztyn needed four sets to defeat Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie – 3-1 (23:25, 27:25, 26:24, 27:25).
But what a mess, for Aluron, as they recently confirmed the medical condition afflicting one of their key player, Trevor Clevenot.
The French outside hitter has been diagnosed with mononucleosis after showing symptoms over the previous weekend. This health setback means he could be away from the court for several weeks.
During his absence, coach Michał Winiarski will have to rely on his other three outside hitters: Bartosz Kwolek, Patryk Łaba, and Samuel Cooper.
And today’s rivals were too strong, closing the game with 4 players in double digit: Cezary Sapiński, star of the day with 19 points, 2 aces 1 block and 16/16 in attack, 100%, brazilian Alan Souza with 18, Nicolas Szerszeń with 13 and Szymon Jakubiszak with 10.

Round 1 will continue tomorrow with other two games, and it will be closed on Monday with the game between newcomers Exact Systems Hemarpol Częstochowa and Ślepsk Malow Suwałki.
