Del Monte® Supercoppa 2023: Sir Susa Vim Perugia triumphs with an epic comeback against Cucine Lube Civitanova!

2 min read

In a spectacular game with lot of resilience and amazing actions, Sir Susa Vim Perugia has been crowned the champions of the Del Monte Supercoppa 2023, seizing the inaugural trophy of the 2023/2024 volleyball season.
The grand final, played at a sold out Biella Forum, in front of 5000 volleyball fans, was a sort of rollercoaster, ended with an epic 2-3 (25:22, 25:23, 21:25, 32:34, 12:15) comeback victory against Cucine Lube Civitanova, after as many as 153 minutes of play!

Despite trailing by two sets, Perugia displayed a remarkable turnaround in a match filled with nail-biting moments.
With the odds stacked against them, after first two sets, Coach Lorenzetti’s squad showed exceptional composure under pressure. Their determination was awarded when they reacted, levelling the match at 2-2 and pushing the contest to an exciting tie-break.
Cucine Lube Civitanova, having missed six match points in the fourth set and wasting a 20-17 lead in the third, were left ruing missed opportunities.
After the majestic performance in the semifinal against Piacenza, Chicco Blengini’s guys repeated themselves, but Perugia is a great rival. If in the finals for the title Lube is better than Perugia for victories’ percentages, is not the same in this competition, the Supercup. Interestingly, since 2017, the team from Civitanova Marche suffered as many as four defeats (including today’s one) in decisive act of the competition that marks new season’s start!

Perugia’s most prolific players were Wilfredo Leon and MVP Wassim Ben Tara with 21 points each, closely followed by Kamil Semeniuk, who also contributed with 20, while Flavio Gualberto also contributed with 13 points and 5 winning blocks, all instrumental in this turnaround.
Adis Lagumdzija’s game-high 22 points for Civitanova was excellent, but it wasn’t enough against the rivals’ tenacious team effort.
