16th Finals of 2023/24 CEV Challenge Cup started today with first 6 games played and the one between Hapoel Mate-Asher Akko from Israel and Bulgaria’s Levski Sofia won without playing by the latter due current situation in Israel.
Two teams took the first step towards Round of 16: Fonte Bastardo Azores from Portugal, who fought a lot but managed to win in Serbia, on the field of Spartak Subotica, 0-3 (25:27, 21:25, 23:25), with 14 winning blocks in just three sets.
The same did one of title contenders Panathinaikos Athens from Greece, who won on the field of Azerbaijan’s Khari Byul Byul Shusha with a clean 0-3 (20:25, 17:25, 20:25) also with a great performance in blocking, 13 points, and 15 points each from Jiri Kovar and Fernando Hernandez.
After losing first set, also France’s Saint Nazaire VB Atlantique celebrated an away victory and they did it in Bulgaria, on the field of Deya Volley Burgas, 1-3 (25:22, 19:25, 18:25, 21:25).
Four sets win also for Slovenia’s Panvita Pomgrad Murska Panvita Sobota who defeated a little bit surprisingly Spain’s Sonora Pamesa Teruel (28:26, 23:25, 25:18, 29:27) after 123 minutes of play!
And the other two games ended at tie break, both in favor of the home teams.
In Finland, the hosts Akaa Volley prevailed over Sebia’s Ribnica Kraljevo by 3-2 (22:25, 25:13, 21:25, 25:14, 15:10) with great numbers, starting from the performance of Matej Smidl, author of as many as 32 points through 58% in attack (with 1 block and 9 aces), to the numbers in serving, as the winners scored as many as 18 aces with only 14 errors.
Close the picture Hungary’s MÁV Foxconn Székesfehérvár who defeated Volley Näfels from Switzerland by 3-2 (25:22, 18:25, 20:25, 25:22, 15:9) too with 23 points from top scorer Marcell Pesti (60% attack with 2 block points).
